Before: I get started let me
tell you my little doggy eye
did not see too much of this
`bigggs.t of Canadian Dog
Shows held .in Toronto this
past week.. It wilt all quite
terrifying after my quiet life
in the Shil.lalah Kennels of
Don and Florence Pullen, RR
4, Clinton.
Prior to leaving my home
kennel for this, my first show,
I was introduced to 7XOfuil-
scale grooming which is the
great prerequisite to
showing. The brushing and
clipping -I endured with in-
finite grace, even the
pedicure. - my paws looked
elegant, not a speck of mud.
As I watched the nailclippers
being put away, 1 said to
myself, "Thank doggy
goodness". But no - not yet.
Ever hear of the "Cat's
Whiskers"; - the finishing
touches to the feline form?
Not so in dogdom. Dogs'
-whiskers are as unsavoury as
D.O.(doggy odour) and no
self-respecting dog arrives at
a show with whiskers
showing. So off came my
whiskers - and off we went to
Toronto.
Accustomed as I am to
rubbing noses with five other
pedigreed Irish Setters.
whose mahogany coats look
much like' my own, - it was a
tail -stopping experience to
find there were dogs of other
shapes, sires- and colours,
Many of them were already
"benched" - that means
occupying the three -sided.
cubicle allotted to . every
competitor. Mine was No. 10
and as soon as I reached it I
headed for the back corner...
curled up- and kept just one
eye open. Once, when I was
off the bench I managed to
wriggle into the crawl space
underneath. This was better
than ever - I was completely
incommunicado.
Dura" my excursion to and
from -show ring I took in
all the sights. Dogs and bit-
ches (the latter is quite
correct canine terminology)
stood, sat or lay around in
various attitudes - some keen,
some plainly nervous and
others boredwith the whole
deal.
The show ring itself is •
dominated by the judge - and
although one can clown
around anywhere else - once
in that ring your pedigree Is
ar'n the line and` you show to
your bast advantage. ntage. After a
certain number of wins,
converted into points. by a
process which addles my
doggy brain, one becomes a
champion. When that day
dawns I shall join the select
canine company of my kennel
mates. Can. Champion
Shillalah's Mollie O'Shea and
Can. Champion Shillalah's
Red Rogue.
In the meantime I prefer a
dog's eye view of the rolling
Huron countryside around the
Pullen homestead, - and toss
me another dog biscuit.
