Vanastra curling club news
Grade seven and eight
students from Huron Cen-
tennial School, Brucefield
and Clinton Public School
have „heel' curling at. the
Vanastra Club this winter.
The game develops team
spirit as well as co-ordination
for the growing young people.
Curling is gaining popularity
and chances are these young
people will participate in
curling as adults.
First draw winners in the
Goderich Invitational two-
day mixed bonspiel were .a
team of Ed and Ardith
Brissette and Wayne and
Gayle Brownridge. The
March 12 and 13 Bonspiel was
sponsored by Alekander
Chapman, Suncoast Estate
and Glenmark Lumber of
Goderich.
A men's curling team from
Vanastra *entered the
Hanover Bonspiel Saturday
March 13. The team com-
posed of skip, D1311 • Mit.
chelmore ; vice, Ray Fischer;
second, Dick Dixon and lead,
Barry ' Davis. The team
placed third.
The Vanastra and Hensall
Curling Clubs held a mixed
jitney at the Vanastra rink on
March 13. Two draws of
exciting curling took place,
followed by a delicious pot
luck meal.
Bruce Shillinglaw, master
of ceremonies for the
evening, gave prizes to the
curling teams as well as door
prizes.
If you are an excellent
curler or a casual curler,
these jitneys are an evening
of fun.
Six couples plan on at-
tending a two day mixed
bonspiel at Camp Borden.

Beginning last tail, the boys
were devoting 45 or 50
minutes to skating drills- As
any real hockey fan knows, a
player must be able to move
equally well to his right or
left, stop and change direc-
tion. skate backwards with
ease, power and balance as
well as bounce immediately
to his feet when knocked or
pulled down.
These skills have been
developed 'to the point where
the boys are now playing a
recognizable brand of hockey
for 30-35 minutes each
session. They have
progressed too from three
different groups using a third
of the rink to the current
situation in which the full ice
surface is used by all players.
Next year there are ap-
proximately 10 or 12 players
ready to move on to the next
