Up again 6 a.m.—hubby off to.work by 7—everything still dry in basement ---children and I (by this time) housed out back in converted school bus camper—waved 'goodbye to hubby as he drove out the lane—better check the basement—Oh, no' water coming in fast—son Andrew and I started bailing—bailed for one hour --rested 15 or 20 minutes—bailed for an hour rested 15 or 20 minutes—kept up this routine until 4 p.m.—hubby arrived home --started to bail -couldn't keep that up all night if power stayed off—few telephone calls later and by 5:30 p.m. borrowed Delco Si/stem—worked great except it was in the basement and children and I sleeping in the house nearly gassed—fumes filtered up through furnace ducts—everyone very il.l-- left house for camper—no one slept much—badly shaken after escapade. 7 a.m. Thursday -owner picked up Delco plant --he'd promised it to someone else (his boss),— Jadk Sturgeon arrived on scene—he and hubby scouted around for gas motor or pump or anything to remove water—water coining in too fast to bail --enter Steve Argyle—very welcomed person—with hayfield volunteer fire department alternator—pumped , out basement—left—back in an hour—pumped again—sur- veyed situation, left machine—Erickson s very grateful—Thursday n n14 a wait} Ipub311AP night n between knee to deep just added one half fon Feb. 25. Mercy me' youngest daughter (Lydia's) fifth birthday{. --what to do—have birthday party in cam- - per -hubby- to Mrs. William - Oetch's, Goshen Line to pick up .beautifully decorated doll birthday cake—cake arrived things brightened—cake and —hope Ontario Hydro's ears burned plenty—my thoughts weren't at all nice -wonder how many more subscribers are in same boat= -think we Historical Socieiy meets The Bayfield Branch of the Huron County Historical Society met for its regular meeting Monday evening„ with Mrs. Gwen Pemberton in the chair and Miss Kay Reid capably administering her secretariatduties.. A ,discussion regarding a bus trip to ahistoric site or a place of historic interest was deferred until early fall. The meeting was reminded of the Public ' meeting to be held ►n Saturday, afternoon, March 20 at 2 p.m. to discuss the proposal for a new Library, and Were also reminded of the Architectural Conservancy meeting on Thursday, March 25 at 7 p.m. (note earlier time) in the Little Inn. Guest speaker will -be-, Dorothy Duncan speaking on interiors of buildings. It was noted that Miss Duncan was on the advisory board for the restoration of the Van Egmond house in Egmond- ville and the Governor's home at the Huron County Gaol in Goderich. It was also learned that the Heritage Tours program is to include Bayfield along with Goderlch., Clinton and 'Seeaforth. Mrs. Pemberton announced two County ftistorical meetings up- coming on Thursday April 15, in Londesboro and on Wed- nesday May 19 in Varna with dill M Ash as guest speaker. Many attend The Main St. of any tourist town is normally rather quiet during the winter months, and more especially if its raining, sleeting and snowing, causing hazardous walking and driving con- ditions, as was the case on Shrove Tuesday, Mar. 2. However, would you believe the Main St., of the summer resort town of Grand Bend was alive with vehicles and pedestrians heading to the Village Inn Retreat Centre on that very night, where the aroma of pancakes and sausages enticed -even the most sceptic "stay -at - homer" to leave is warm abode to partake of the delicious food. The food was exceptionally good -- big light pancakes, all types. of toppings from the traditional maple syrup to whipped creain and chopped nuts; fat, juicy sausages, homemade pies, pots of coffee and glasses of milk. The Village Inn Retreat Centre and all its various activities is open all year round ' In the fall of 1973, an interdenominational group of businessmen in the Grand Bend area looked for a new way to become inirolved ministry. They subsequently purchased a resort hotel, and under a registered, charitable organization, supper operate it as a Retreat Centre. Leo Morningstar, . the manager said the centre can accommodate - 75 to 100 persons. The rooms are at- tractively ttractively panelled and carpeted, with hot and cold water in each room. Several larger rooms are set up for conference or group use. The dining arrangements . are from the menu in the Village Inn Restaurant for in- dividuals or small groups and buffet for large groups. Beyond renting the facility to groupwho wish`to plan their own treat or workshop, the Cen of- fers retreats on a regular basis for various affinity groups... family life education, marriage enrich- ment,senior citizens' holidays, Lay theology workshops. leadership development and personal growth experiences. While observing 'drove Tuesday at the Retreat, our family remarked at the cleanliness of the whole building and especially the washrooms, the friendly atmosphere and the feeling of warmth, not to mention the delicious food. On Monday March 8, Grand Bend again visited Bayfield to play the third and final game against hayfield Atoms with Darin Telford scoring the first goal to put Byfield in the lead assisted by Robbie Chapman and David Telford. Bayfield came back in the second period to stay in the game with Robbie Siertsema getting the second goal with Darin Telford's help. Robbie Siertsema came back to get the third goal for Bayfield on an assist from Darin Telford and Robbie Chapman. On Monday,orch Blyth Pee Wees v) gan five against y+l Wee. Mr. , Meyer remained at home suffering from a bad back. Mrs. Fred Le Beau was the guest of her daughter and grandchildren, Mrs. Vicki McLaughlin, Meagan, Alfie and Courtney in Toronto last week. On Friday she arrived in London by train where she spent the weekend with her soli. Mr. and Mrs.: Rob Cluff, Rob and Tara. She was joined on the weekend by her husband and returned home on Sunday. Best wishes to Mrs. Albert (Helen) Craig and to Mr. Russ Kerr, who are both patients in Clinton Public Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Norman F. Cooper of Mount Clemens, Mich. entertained Mr. and WS. Douglas Chesney of Lacomb. Alberta and Mrs. MacTavish of Mitchell during the weekend at their Village residence on Clan Gregor Square. The Chesney s are enroute to their home on Gull Lake, Alberta after spending three weeks cruising the Caribbean Islands on their yacht the "Dana". Mr. and Mrs. Doug Curran, Toul'ney\, a big success The third annual Bayfield Atom Hockey Tou nament Was -held in the -ar na 'on "February 27, 28 and 29 with three teams from Goderich, one from Clinton, one from Grand Bend, one from Zurich, one from Huron Park and the Bayfield Atoms participating.. After two games Friday evening and six on Saturday, four teams emerged to the two final playoff games on Sunday. In the first game, at noon on Sunday, Zurich defeated Goderich Glenmark #domes 8 to 6 to win the "B" Trophy. At 2 p.m.' Grand • Bend defeated hayfield 5 - 4 to win the ,.A„Trophy. The Bayfield Minor Hockey Association say thanks to all the teams thatparticipated in the tournament with a special thank you to Fairholme Dairy, Clinton for their donation of chocolate milk for the boys and to Grahams General Store for donating the hot dog buns.
