The Honourable Mr. William Davis, Parliament Buildings, Toronto, Ontario. Dear Mr. Davis; As a_lifelong. resident of Huron County, it was ,with a sense of deep loss when I heard that Mr. Miller was closing the Public Hospital at Clinten. Like all my neigh- -boursAve were left in a state of helplessness that such a thing co.uid..happen in what is still hailed as a democratic country. Without past history there can be no future, so let us think back to the time when, these hospitals were built, not by government, but by the people of this area for the people of this area. Even today much of the equipment in the Clinton hospital was not installed by the ministry of , . health. but by the auxiliary of the hospital; through the assistance of the people of Clintpn and the surrounding area. Let us now look at some of the benefits of the Clinton hospital: Operating rooms Fully equiped, the best in Huron COWItY. whlch is 44040.0to by the doctors of the area; The most modern ;Apo efficient outside of the largest city hospitals; Heart machines - The only hospital in Huron equipped and staffed by qualified personnel, who when not required to operate the equipment are still carrying on their other duties; + Dialysis - One of the few non -city hospitals so equip- ped; + The cost - Standard ward rate - Clinton - Under $55.00 per day, London Victoria - Over $140.00 per day; + Operating results - Complete lack of cases where post operative patients have had to retgra because of infection. 'Can Stratford, London,or even Toronto make this claim? As an accountant by trade. I am deeply interested in learning more about the figures given out by Mr. Miller and yet in watching the news ir so that these figures are not even being given to the members of the op- position so I would not have much hope of being allowed access to them. Sir, if you expect us to believe , the figures, then put them up for scrutiny and allow 40,40 privilege of determining whether they are in fact true or not. You might well ask why we should doubt these figures. 1 always remember the old axiom that "figures lie and liars figure" and when we think back to just a short time before the last Provincial election when Mr. Miller stated that no hospitals would be closed in Huron, yet noW we have two of them. Skep- tical, YES, and I believe with considerable justification, just as we are skeptical of the need of a $7 million hospital in Mr. Miller's own riding. I have not gone into the fact that we are in a snowbelt area, where getting even to Clinton could be a hardship, Leap Year Sale Girls! We the taxpayers. Where then does all the -saving then' go that Mr. Miller is ad- vocating?' Your ministry has failed to take into account the personatouch which results in more rapid recovery resulting in less patient days spent at the hospital. You • might ask how I am so well versed? Mr. Davis, I spent fur weeks in the Clinton hospital 1972 following a coronary attack, and our son has spent close to 365 days in Victoria Hospital at London, over the period of 16 years, I do know the difference Mr. Davis. 1 realize Sir that your time is valuable but 1 urge you to reconsider the closing of this institution, as it appears that witt.,)at further proof this is much more of a political nature than a truly financial one. When one sees that nine of the ten hospitals closed are in ridings currently held by members of the opposition, and the tenth, though held by your party, is in a riding where the majority of people are not of Canadian birth, one wonders. Perhaps by now you think this comes from a long time Liberal supporter. but I assure you this is not the case, as I was one of the voting delegates who voted for Mr. McNaughton at his election to be the member of your party in Huron, and I never failed to vote for him in any succeeding election. I respected and admired Mr. McNaughton but the words which he spoke on the night that Jack Riddell won the Huron By-election will never be forgotten. when he said "!somedayeole of Haron.will regret this". is this then what he predicted? Or what of Mr. Miller's statement that "It is cheaper to bury the people than fix them up". Oh I realize that both of these statements could have been given in the heat of the moment. but one wonders. At the time of your election as leader of the Conservative party. I heard you speak of the future of Ontario and what you and your party could do for it. Where is that • vision today? It is also disastrous to4adividuals who have given doilations of nipney, some ofwhich have been very great, ant, those individuals and organizations who have given time. money and moral support to our Clinton Community Public Hospital. Frank Miller has made the statement that if we can make other alternative proposals. he may re -assess his closure plans for our hospital. We have two. suggestions to make which also may puncture his ego. Our first suggestion is that. the Davis dictatorial Cabinet give to the Clinton Hospital, which has supplied serVrces for the past seventy years. that part of the premiums paid by the people of that district to the Ontario Health. Plan and the part of the premiums reserved for hospitalization plus the Fflieral grant towards hospita1izatioIiven the efficient administration of ourhosp ital. The balance of the premiums slated for medicare can still be handled by Mr. rvl Hier and his cohorts Any patients outside our district would have their costs paid by the Ontario, Health plan. Patients from our district who may require special services from other hospitals would have their hospitalization paid by our own4hospital board. All ex- penses over and above premiums and grants could be paid by tax from the property owners in the district serviced by. our hospital. Our srecOnd suggestion is that the people o,f Huron County demand that our 'two Liberal members of Parliament, Jack Riddell and Murray_ Gaunt appeal to the other Liberal members of the Ontario Parliament and back an N.D.P. vote of non;,' confidence in the Legislature. .when Parliament convenes' in March.
