Valentine's= party On Thursday. Feb. 12, the parents, , Q Baur Kindergarten children were invited' to take part in our skating program at the arena - Following the skating fun, the parents returned to the school for refreshments. The children exchanged valen- tines and performed a song , and dance routine in keeping with the special day. -: , Basketball free throw On January 31 the Knights of Columbus of this district sponsored; a basketball 'free throw. Each participant had 10 chances to throw the ball through the hoap. The following students from our school took part: • 'Debbie Shanahan, Joanne Middleton. Mary Hill, Danny Merrier, Vince Brochu and Pete McMahon. Although we didn't have- any winners, ' the students enjoyed' themselves. Joanne was our high scorer with 4 baskets out of 10. The competitiontook place in Goderich. All our students received certificates of, participation. We would like to thank Mrs. M. Middleton for driving our competitors to this event. -Public speaking During February, there will be a Public,: Speaking Contest within the school. In grades 4-6 and 7-8. the winners will advance to .the Zone Speaking Contest. Here they will compete against students from St. Mary's, Goderich St. Joseph's, Kingsbridge: and Sacred Heart, W ingham. The winners from this competition will compete in Pit urch antes Oreeting Into the sanctuary at the united hureh, k n Sunday- morning were Mre-. Rev. McDonald . children's story was "Courtesy and how it pays," Junior leaders were Shawn Bromley, Marjorie 'Duizer and ' Muriel Sewers The message was "When hope is dead." There will be no church February 22 and 29, as Rev. McDonald will be on holiday. Berean Unit The Berean unit meeting was hell on Tuesday February 10 at 2:30 p.m. President Gladys Gourley opened the meeting with a reading entitled "A friendly valentine". Opening devotions were, taken by Dora Shobbrook and Mary Robinson. Dora read, "No Bad W eather" and the theme was "Inspiration." Hymns were sung and the scripture ,was read by Mary Robinson. A prayer was followed by another hymn. The president conducted the business meeting. The minutes of the last meeting were read by the secretary Nona Pipe. • A letter of thanks was read from the Scott Missions and letters were also received from Mrs. Harriett Knox and Mrs. Ida Townsend. The treasurer's report was read by Mrs. Dora Sh #brook: Happy Birthday was sung for Helen Alexander and Nona. Pipe - Roll call was answered by 12 members giving a bible verse with the word "love" in it. They also had to tell something newsworthy about Tanzania. The Huron -Perth Presbyterial was cancelled due to the weather. Another date has not been set yet. The Worid Day of Prayer is to be held March 5at8p.m.. when Hattie Wood will be guest speaker. The study was continued on Tanzania when Dora gave some statistics on education. religion and the women in the country. Mary discussed the health and .the work habits of the people. Dora gave a reading on St. Valentine. The March meeting will include a study of China. Those in charge of the discussion will be Nona Pipe. Mary Longman and Myrtle Fairservice. The meeting closed with a hymn and a prayer. Lunch was served by Nona Pipe. Mary Longman and Myrtle Fairservice. Sorry to have omitted the name of Vi Burns on the Funeral lunch committee on the slate of officers report. WI Card Party There were nine tables in play at the WI card party held on Friday night, February 13. The winners were: ladies' high, 1Vtargeret ,Taylor; Ione hand, Dora Shobbrook; low, Muriel Sewers; men's high. Gordon Murray; Ione hand. Don Buchanan; and tow, Nor..mn Vincent. There will be another card party in two weeks, February 27. at 8:30 p.m. Those in charge will be Hazel •Reid, "Ruth Vincent and Addie Hunking. Personals Mrs. Harry Durnin was admitted to St. Joseph's hospital in London on Mon- day, February 9. She wilt be having surgery. Mrs. Allen Shaddick- spent the weekend in Toronto at- tending the February con- ference of Federated Women Teachers. The topic was ,fitness. : Mr. and Mrs. Tilman Westerhout and family returned home on Sunday February 8 from spending two weeks in Florida. Any girls 12 years of age or over by March 1, interestedin the 4-H program. Roll call was taken with 15 members present Marj in- formed everyone of the an- nual convention to be held this year at Peterborough, and also read a letter from the Kinsmen regarding Heritage Day.... The treasurer, Gayle Wise reported on the balance in the club's account. After a discussion, Lois Fitzgerald made a motion. seconded by Audrey Kemp, that we form an Exemplar Chapter next September. Audrey Kemp also agreed to start making plans for Rushing. The ways and means committee asked that books of tickets and moneybe returned at the next meeting . Sharon Carter, social chairman made a list of items to be ordered for the Spring Dance and also formed a ,.decorating committee. "Mary Ann Yates reported that she wrote to the Foster Child. It was decided that an order be made for six baby sppons. Marie Middleton made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Ann Adams. Everyone repeated the closing ritual and then joined hands for the M,ezpali.
