This is not the weather for heavy or very serious reading, but FRIER LESLIES POPULAR MONTHLY adapts itself to all seasons. The August number gives a most attractive sketch by George Make - peace Towle of "The Nestor of Europe;" the Emperor William of Germany. If that is not light enough, Daudet's sketch of "Tar- tarin in the Alps," and stories like Towner's "Hermon Drake's Ashes," "Bouteile's "The Lost Lady, ' "An Unknown Name," "A Scrap of Pate, ,' -will certainly tempt readers. Crofut, the lively lecturer and newspaper writer, telly of the dour Fields, not in the country, but of the country, Cyrus W., David D.., Stephen J. and Henry M. Field. Laura C. Holloway gives a very readable account of Lady Burdett Coutts, the philan- thropist; Lucy H. Hooper, • queen of cor- respondents, tells of the "Water Supply of Paris;" A Ship -Portage from sea to sea" is au able discussion of the merits of the pro- posed ship -railway at Tehuantepec.' F. C. Valentine tells of "Central American Women;,' and Professor Eaton discusses the important subject, '-Fresh and Foul Air." On the 26th of April last three ]rinds ot: wheat, Red Fyfe, Blue Stem and a Russian variety from the Black Sea, were planted in specially prepared ground on the Kinalmeaky farm, Headingly, Manitoba. The growth of the Red Fyfe and Blue Stein has been about the same, and on the 19th ult., they both measured 23i inches. The Russian throughout has taken the lead and stood ,28 inches high on the above mentioned date. On the morning of the 20th ult., the ears commenced to appear on the side of the stems of the Russian variety, being little more than 54 days from seeding to earing. Neither the Red Fyfe nor Blue Stem showed any signs of eating, and the indications are that they will be from 10 to 14 behind days •the Russian variety. DIED.
