To give the 1eople of Ontario the facts of the ease, he writes the following letter to the Toronto !tfail, which appeared a few days ago. digest the oontenta of the followiug :— To the Editor of the Mail. Sia.—Having returned to Ontario for a fortnight on business relative to church work. I have been amused, and not a little surprised, to see my name still to the fore in regard to the Indian problem, this time, how- ever, apparently to settle the question as to whether I am a Tory or a Reformer. The lllail claims that I am a Reformer and the Globe that I am "a Tory of the Tories." I never thought it a matter of any public inter- est what I was politically. But it the two Journals care to know, I may answer. The Globe correspondent says the Mail calls "Rev. Mr. Andrews a Reformer. The Illail knows this is a lie. He is a Tory, aucl always has been a Tory of the the Tories." Personally, although having had a vote in two counties in Ontario for many years, it has never been oast for a can- didate in any political campaign. I never de- livered a political speech or to my knowledge wrote a line merely to help any political party. What the writer means by "a Tory of the Tories," Ithardly know. 11 that I am of a Tory family—then my honored father's re- cord may be given. He always voted, from the days of James iT. Price to the end of the chapter, for Reform candidates, except once when lie cast his vote for a special friend. " My brother established the Bruce Reporter at 'Kincardine, when the Hon. Edward Blake first contested the South Riding of Bruce and that paper was the recognized organ of the -party and is still. The truth is I' have not time to be a politician and have no desire to ally myself to any party. But I have strong views on some leading questions of the day, anal will not avow them. I am a free trader, but the nation that will not deal with us old that basis shall not find me willing to receive her goods free, unless it be to my own inter- est in some cases to allow them so to enter. In the merits of the Riel question I breathed very freely when I learnetthat Riel had been actually hanged, and I amliankfull that the Government had enough backbone and good sense not to interfere with the course of Itut- ice in his case. I am a prohibitionist out and out, but I want the Government to have con- trol of the entire manufacture of liquors and also of their sale, which shall be restricted to medicinal and mechanical purposes—sales to d all bysalaried t h • A.
