Useless to save foil
says local CNIB head
Don't let foil fool you. That
was the warning of George
Cox. president of the
Bluewater Club of The
Canadian- Council for the
Blind
In a special interview for
White Cane Week, February
1-7, he declared, "No matter
how high the bundle. foil from
cigarette packages will never
buy a.do .guide for a blind
person.
He also rejected cellophane
strips._ match folders, tags
from tea bags and ail bobbles
that frequently are said to
supply ado*.
Mr. Cox told of a large
apartment house in Van-
couver where every tenant
was saving foil. A Montreal
department store had all
employees involved in the
project While in Winnipeg a
hospital nursing staff did the
same thing.
He mentioned a high school
in Toronto who collected four
tons of cellophane strips
before they checked with
CNIB and discovered that
their collection was wor-
thless.

In reality dog guides cost a
lot of money. CNIB arranges

at two dog guide schools in
the United States, Guide Dogs

Morristonw. N.J. Candidates
take a three months course.
They learn to handle the dog.
to control it in heavy traffic

A dog and his master are a
working team. Usually they
move quickly along the street
together but sometimes they
need a little help.
To win attention simply
speak to the person. Ask if he
can use help. Don't pat the
dog. If you do. you still only
take his mind from his duty.

By Rev. W. Jose
Miller, Ph. D.
Dr. Elsie V. King. inventor
of the widely successful
"S mok4-a-logue" has helped
more people who "couldn't
quit" smoking by reversing
the usual, approach than
doctors, preachers and
cancer researchers com-
bined.
The power of her approach
is that she never uses fear or
guilt, and will not allow them
in the groups she directs. She
may even teach smokers how
to smokein a different way.
rather than tell them to stop.
She wants persons to decide
for themselves how to smoke
and how much to smoke. 'as
well as how little to smoke
and how not to smoke.
The blessing of her - ap-
proach is its refusal to use
wrong motives for "good
reasons". And, she has a lot
to teach those who work in the
arena ' of interpersonal
relating.
The New Testament says
that the "perfect love", which
Christianity is supposed to
generate. is the love which
casts out fear. Yet, most of
the churchianity to which the
Western World is exposed is a
motive of fear. Fear of Hell.
Fear of "atheists". Fear of
leisure. Fear of feeling good.
Fear of being close-
• particularly to persons of the
same gender. Fear of having
"too good a time".
The use of fear as a motive
triggers the rebellious
process in persons and
generates as much anger as it
does compliance. Hate is
hate, whether of sin or of
sinners. Fear is fear, whether
of commies or death.
Greed is greed, whether for
more church members ,or
more money. Lust is lust.
whether for one woman or a
dozen.
The Christian joy of life, the
promised conversion from
anxiety -ridden animals to
celebrate Blot dren of God,
the proclaimed victory over
death and sin, are as missing
from many churches as from"
the Atheists and animists!
Christians seem to be
equally afraid of being in Hell
and of being in Heaven.
