Webber, orae e( .onr oldest tired most respected eitiaens, who has been so lopg wagering ]'roan disease of the hones of ilio bead Containing the heari ig appw ratite, is showing signs of recovery,, The ,very grave open, ation of cutting through tete skull behind the . ear, wee performed by Dr, Browning, of Exeter.. Tremzv,tr,-0f . st C n Th urday la e kt 6th annual eirawbsrry festival of the Centralia Methodist Church, was held on the parsonage grounds and a larg' er crowd was never seen, on a similar occasion. A better place for an on- tertaiument of this kind could not well be devised, and it never appeared 0o better advantage, with the excep- tion that the beda of beautiful flowers were not to be seen. The tables fairly gro, red with go od thin gs. Thestrawherrswere served with 8i real cream, with an abundance f e l a o e accompaniments of cocoa nut, wall nut and almost every known hind tot f cake. While the material wants were thusbeing satisfied, the eyes also.were feasted with a profusion of bouquets. Pretty ettendents moved among those of older years and it was hard to say which ?afire the most business like.. Those were also gratified by nd of music be presence of the Crediton brass ban, who played in a very pleasing manner. About Sive o'clock, Rev. Jas. (a•rnlvnm, of Exetee, appeared on the platform and gave a stirring address of sound thought intermingled with sentences which brought forth mach applause; he said he 'was surprised to see such a large gatheritTg at.so small a plane —indeed it gave him much pleasure to see such a host of bright and cheerful fades. He said that be hop- ed to have the ' pleasure of again rtddreesing them on the anniversary day of our Dominion. He said, that, doubtless many who were facing him understood the reason why 1st July was termed Dominion Day. Nine- teen years ago Canada entered upon a new phase of her existence as a Dominion. Many recollect some- thing about the nrolouged negotia- tions which took .place before this could bo accomplished. In 1865 the two parties in the uld Province of Canada had come to a dead look, namely, through the egitation of the people of upper Canada for represent- ation by population with the lower Canadians.. It wri,A et this juncture that the pro,ioEal` for Confederation was mooted, `and advantage was taken of Rn agitation in the same direction for a proposed union of the three maritime 'Provinces: In short, a preliminary meeting of delicates from the different provinces was held at Charlottetown, rt here a proposition was made for a larger union. A sub- sequent, meeting was held at Quebec, where the terms of confederation were drawn up and agreed upon. The sandhi.,f--kilo Imperial Parlia- ment to„the Confederation Act was obtained early in 1767, and on the est of July of that year the four provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotiabecame the Dominion of Canada. 'At. later periods the provinces • of Prince Edward island, Manitoba and British Columbia were admitted into the Ccnfederation. Since that memor- able day, -on the 1st July, 1867, vast changes have taken place. The Home Rule granted to each province has been of immense advantage to them. This is especially noticeable in our own Province, which, once freed from the position it was in, en- tered on ,a career of progress and prosperity. In 1871 or 1872 the era of building local railways began, and ccs now we have roads which connect so that one can travel many hundred miles in a day. The liberality of of municipalities was largely supple- mented by the provincial government. This gave an impetus to the develop- ment of our' resources, and in every direction there a as activity, enter- prise and growth. Thus it i', that we ought to celebrate July let in a right loyal mar ner and. Lope that Canada will be'e'en more prosperous in the future than in the past. There were to have • been several other speakers present, but, for reasons which could not he avoided, were absent. All kinds of amusements were provided;• Ruch as croquet, sat, , quoits, &c. The attendance wady large, and the festival de- served it. Too 111011 credit cannot be gl' en to thnt•e ladies nud (reline- men who worked so hard to make the affair it success.. There was an atm - dance of everything, and all the ar rangelnents were carried out in a most mitigatory tnannor. The pastor, Rev. Mr. Kershow, is to be congratu- lated, also, for the 1nanuer, in which .lie assisted in furth'erin,r the enjoy— ment•of the:visitors.
