The following is a
statement from Huron -

concerning the closing of
Goderich tl•sycitiatric
Haseital announced for April
1, 19416.
?dr. Riddell has called on
Health Ministertrank Mitier
to reconsider the decision
regarding GPH.
Mr. Riddell says:
"Over the last 10 years it
has become widely accepted
that the Goderich Psychiatric
Hospital provides excellent
and , very comprehensive
care. Sonic- 90 percent of the

"Services provided by the
hospital include programs for

eat-putients. alcohol and drug
addiction. child welfare and a
psychatric active care
treatment ward. It would be
impossible for similar ser-
vices to be offered under the
auspices of a General
Hospital.
"Not only is Goderich
Psychiatric Hospital a very
modern facility, but mental
health care experts the world
Over agree that a unit of this
size is infinitely more ef-
fective than a larger unit and
that. small communities are
preferable to large cities for
the location of this type of
care centre.
"Goderich has one of the
highest admission rates in the
Province for a hospital of this
size and capacity. There are
some 50 to 60 admissions and
discharges each month,
which alone, is testimony to
the quality of the treatment
provided.
"The suggestion has been
made that the hospital is only
running at 60 percent oc-
cupancy, but this is not the
case. For some time, the
hospital has been running at
.,90 ,to 9:.! percent occupancy

provincially imposed

"As recently its tag July,
the hospital received from the
Canadian Council ort Hospital
Accreditation. one of the
foremost accreditations ef
any hospital in Ontario. In the
area of rehabilitation, it is
one of the best itt Canada.
"I fail to see how the
Minister can possibly justify
the decision to close down the
Goderich Psychiatric
Hospital -- u decision that can
only be regarded as the most
retrograde step in mental
health care ever undertaken
by the Ministry,"
•"'Top priority should be
given to reconsideration of
this situation with a view to
reversing the decision to
close down a facility which is
making an unique and im-
portant contribution to
mental health care in the
Province.
