edy, averted
A near tragedy was averted
about eight and a half miles
west of Goderich on Lake
Huron, when the fishing tug
the Larry John captained by
Jerry Reid ran into difficulty
about noonen Monday.
The Larry John was out in
the Lake pulling fishing nets
when the plate around the
propeller shaft came loose,
all the stuffing was lost, and
she began to take on water at
a rapid rate...
She radioed a distress call
and was heard by Bob
McGraw owner and Captain
-of the Bessie Aaiun who was
about 10 minutes away from
the stricken vessel, and
reportedly the only ship
within 100 miles on the Lake.
Mr, McGraw and his four
man crew immediatelY left
their fishing grounds and
went to the aid of the Larry
John and her Captain and two
crew members, and towed
her safely to Port in
Goderich.
The operation took almost
an' hour in very rough water.
The captain and crew were
later interviewed at McLeod
Fisheries in Bayfield, where
they were badly shaken, but
thankful to be safe on shore.
Much praise -was given to
Captain McGraw and the
crew of the Bessie Ann 11,
without whose assistance
Captain Reid, said they would
have floundered in less than
three hours.
