Where is school spirit?
By George Cull
At C.H.S.S. school spirit is
neither dead nor alive, but it
is showing many symptoms
pf being seriously ill. Before
rescribing a cure, let's look
at the patient. What is school
spirit?
I have heard many corn-
plicate4 and wordy
definitions of school spirit.
For me school spirit can be
summed up in a very simple
equation: school spirit equals
fmvolvement.
School spirit is not just
cheeting at games, being on a
school team, taking part in a
musical, being a member of
student council or helping 10
produce a school year book. It
includes these things most
assuredly, but it is also much
more. School spirit is the
outcome Of the involvement
of both teachers and students
In the many activities that go
into developing the potential
of a personality.
School spirit is not
something that starts at 3:15
and ends at 4 o'clock. School
spirit includes all the ac-
tivities of school, academie
and extracurricular. School
spirit is invejy,ement.
Now that we' know the
patient, let us look at the
symptoms that would suggest
,sickness. If school spirit is
involvement, how can it be
healthy while the following
things are happening at our
•school? 1. The new in-
tramural sports program has
missed three-quarters of -its
schedule so far because
students did not show up for
the games; 2. the school is let
out early to see a game and
siihundred students leave; 3.
talking with teachers I have
found that many are con-
cerned with the low marks on
tests; 4. many teams have
only tine or two grade .nine
students when last year they
had ten or tivelve; and 5. well
prepared assembly programs
are met with "boos' and
inattention. Of course
assemblies can't be im-
portant because few teachers
attend them,
However, not all of the
symptoms are discouraging.
Many teams and clubs are
having a good year, and
many students are doing well
in their studies.
•'Allaying looked at the
patient and his symptoms,
would like to examine some
possible cures. First of all,
who is responsible for a sick
school spirit? Of course .the
same people who are
responsible for a healthy
school spirit - we all are.
However, the burden does fall
on some harder than on
othm. The students must
look to theirleaders.
In a school this includes the
student council represen-
tatives, the council
executives, the teachers and
the school administration.
There can be no healthy
school spirit without positive
Aeadershirs Thus, it mu4t
follow that some aspect of
-161 WA; at
some or all levels, may be
lacking, I would suggekt that
leaders examine the
following questions carefully:
1) Are you promoting an
activity or ideal in school, or
is school just a place to spend
as few hours a day as
possible?
2U` Are the programs or
ideals that you wish to
develop well explained and
promoted? No program will
succeed without this first.
To the individual student, I
would say that if you are not
working at your studies. and
do not belong to at least one
extra -curricular activity, you
are missing a great op-
portunity and are seriously
contributirig.,, it, to , a,
deteriorating school spirit.
In conclusion, I would
prescribe the following
treatment: a large shot of
medicine, involvement. It
should be .taken intravenously
by all who come to school. - by
George Cull.

Volleyball
The 1975 volleyball season
has ended with the Clinton
Seniors placing fourth in
Huron -Perth competition.
Last Wednesday the
deciding tournament was
held in St. Marys. This marks
the third year in a row that
Central Huron has placed
fourth. t
Not having ,their peak
performance, the Senior
Redmen met a very worthy
opponent in the three Perth
schools. Listowel, Mitchel
and St. Marys all beat Clinton
two games straight and thus
taking first, second and third
season over
place.
It mught be noted that
Central Huron beat St. Marys
in the second match, however
a bad call by the referee
nullified this victory. The
referee called' Paul Robinson
as being -in -the -net on Clin-
ton's game point. St. Mary's
then turned around and got
three consecutive points to
win the match, after the
game bystanders verified
that Robinson was not in the
net and on top of that St.
Mary's had hit the ball four
times on the questioned play,
thus making the home town
boys doubly wronged.
In other games, Clinton
handily defeated Goderich
and split a game apiece with
Wingham. All in all not the
most impressive windup •the
boys have seen. On the bright
side of the day, though, Dave
Counter and Peter Wise
teamed up and provided
excellent entertainment.
The season resulted in a 18-
15 win - loss record for the
boys. At this opportunity the
team would like to thank
Coach Keith Allen for his
support and excellent
coaching job.
Pep rally raises spirits
Last Thursday, October 23,
C.. . H.S.S. witnessed one of
the biggest,sports days we've
had so far. Four of our teams
were competing" in at-home
games. The day started off
with a very well conducted
Pep Rally with Marlene Dale
'acting as mistress of
ceremonies.
The cheerleaders started
the ball rolling with their
opening skit capturing most
of the audience's attention.
They lined up across the
stage dressed in various
uniforms and chanted "If I
wasn't a cheerleader, I'd be
a...waitress, ice cream man.
plumber, stripper, chicken,
butcher, window washer,
football player, or a Red men
supporter." It has been said
that it was the little blonde
stripper who stole the show.
Next on the agenda was a
visit from Bernie Basketball
(Mr. Steep) who introduced
this year's Senior Basketball
team as: Janet (the swoosh)
McKinley; Susan (the
dribble) Tyndall; (Over and
Back) Bev Slade; (Lay up)
Lou Messelwood, Karen (the
,cutter) McGregor, Mary
Anne Cummings -and Gayle'
Cunningham (the Bobbsey
Twins), Susan (Pass ball)
Parke, Marlene (the Dasher)
Dale, Brenda (the bruiser)
McKinley and Nelly (The
Hands) Van Wonderen, who
is captain of the team. These
girls ended their appearance
on stage with a ',short poem
and song.
Next to appear on stage
was Miss Burch with her
Junior Girls Basketbalttearn,
who, before they left the stage
ended with a cheer - "Let's
go. let's win Redwomen"
Coach Keith Allen in-
troduced his, Senior Boys
Volleyball team to the
students and told us of their
fine efforts at Huron Perth
the day before.
The Junior Boys Volleyball
team was introduced by Mr.
Hodgins, their coach, who
commended this team for
'their 'fine work. during this
year's volleyball season. Mr.
Hodgins told the students that
next year he would be losing
ten of this year's eleven
junior players. He also
pointed out to the student
body, the lack of participation
and enthusiasm in the various
sports events shown by this
year's grade nine classes. He
hopes that there will be more
participation shown by next
year's grade nine, or C.H.S.S.
might not have a Junior Boys
Volleyball team.
The cheerleaders, then
again, were able to change

If YOU know your boyfriend
stili likes you, why don't you
ask him Mit. It he is short of
money you could find
something to do that doesn't
take a lot of money or you
could offer to pay half.
Yu can try to talk to him
about his shyness but don't

He may have a very good

Dear Annie
My boyfriend, wants me to
go everywhere he goes and do
everything he tells me. I am
not allowed to go anywhere
unless he knows where I am
going. What should I do? Tied
Down.
Dear Tied Down.
If you don't like, to go
everywhere with your
boyfeiend tell him so and
don't let him make a slave out
of you, after all this is
International Woman's Year.
It is possible that he
worries a great deal about
you when he doesn't know
where you are and that he is
more relaxed when he knows
you are all right. If it bothers
you a great deal though ask
him to ease up on it.
On the over all I feel your
boyfriend needs a let down, to
show him that he isn't the
boss of your life.

Your .problem Is a fairly
uncommon one so I can only
suggest some possible an-
swers: 11) Find out what your
friends have Against him and
decide whether or not you can
respect their opinion; 2) .Tell
your friends that you do want
to go out with him to see if
what they say is true. Maybe
what your friends know is all
wrong.
Whichever you decide, if
your friends are true friends
they will respect what you
decide. You may also tell
your friends that nothing may
come from the one date
anyway.
