Dr. Gunn went overseas in the #first, Great War in 1016 and the hospital was closed for four, years. In February 1919 the hospital re -opened under the management . of the Ladies' " Board with Mrs. R.E. Manning. Pres:. Miss Winnie fl'Nttil, Secr., and Amy Howson, Treasurer. Miss Jessie Grainger was the Superintendent. Members of the first graduating class were Greta Mustard (Mrs. Wm. Crooks); Fannie McKenzie (Mrs. Andrew . Mo are): and Miss Annene Si rl:air: who graduated in 1922. Myrtle Trewurtha (tate Mra, J. - liatkin); and Dorothy Jago. Mrs.. pied McCool, came in to train one or two . years later. Later Presidents were Mrs. N.W. Trewartha, Mrs. W. Brydone;, Mrs. H.B. Combe. Miss W. t}'Neil, Mrs. Harry.Johnson. and Mrs, Flora Venner was Pres.. in 15139; In 936't a maraagernent.-.of__ the Hospital was taken over by men. the first president was Dr. .J.W. Shaw; seer., trees., R.E. Manning. The second pres., was Mr. Frank Fingland; seer.. treas. Harold Lawson and Arthur Knight: " • During this time (1922) 'Mr. M.D. McTaggart had given his father's residence on Shipley Street for a hospital building, and it was formally accepted us such at a board meeting in-; lay 1922. The stuff moved in from titcrold hospital (later the; Commercial Inn) with Miss Grainger as Supt. In 1926 the X-ray was in- stalled. This was mode possible through the generosity of Mr: John Howson of Vancouver, a former Clinton boy. • Miss Sinclair came in 1933 as Night Supervisor, just a few days before the death of Dr. Gaudier. About three weeks later Dr. W.A. Oakes came as Chief Surgeon. In 1934 the main building was r e-rnodelled and the elevator installed. - Miss Grainger retired in October 1946. and Miss 'Sinclair -took. -Supt., as she had ably assisted Mia 'araitt er-"in-•' .. this capacity from 1931-46. To allevisate the overcrowded cu fldition it was found necessary to add a new wing to the building. and on May 12th, 1949, the new 8140,000.00 - 24 bed wing was officially opened. The official ceremony was performed by the Thomas. Pryde of Exeter. who was M.L.A. for South Huron at \ the time. He made a special, mention of Dr. Shaw, the 86 year old physician who was the oldest,. practising Doctor in town. having served the people faithfully for 59 years. Others taking part in the ceremony were Dr. Oakes. Pres.. of the Curator* Hospital Association, Elston Cardiff. M p. for South Huron; Robert Hattie. Mayor of Clinton. and John Armstrong. Warden of Huron County. A- plaque com- memorating.former residents of Clinton, dedicated by Rev. D.J. Lane of the Presbyterian church. was unveiled by Dr. J.W. Shaw. Mrs. F. Fingland was the first woman to be appointed 10 the Men's Board of the new Clinton Community Hospital in 1950. The Pres.. of the ladies Hospital Auxiliary has automatically been a member et the board ever since. In 1950 the Nurse's residence was built . with. a . bequest of $40,.00 from Col.. end Mrs. H.T. Rance. A'plaque was placed in the residence in their honour. . A Monster Bazaar and Penny Sate • Converted by Mrs. -F. During Mia period Miss Sinclair ,risigned 'ars Supt.and Miss Hilda Sinith repiaeed, her, followed bit Mrs. Phinney. From the years 168a whole new wing was built on the West side of the hospital. Dr.. Harry Shaw. (a son of J.W. .Shaw), Dartmouth College, New Hampshire came . for the big opening.' In 1966 Miss Kathleen Elliott was made "Director of Nursing" to replace the hitherto well. known title of Superintendent et Nurse's. She has held this office until her retirement, when Miss Barbara Cooper replaced her` in April 1975. The property for a parking n- lot was purchased from the Steep family in 1968, and was later leased to the; "Health Unit" the revenue from such going to the Hospital. In 1970-71 the five rooms at the South; East „corner of the nurses' residence Were renovated for Dr. Harrett's office needs. The Physiotherapy Dept., was extended and a new Board Room completed.
