Leslie's Carriage Shop
copyright 1975 °
The building on the northwest
corner of Huron and Orange
Streets was originally . a three-
storey store and residence o*ned
and _ operated: --by Sidney Mouo-
tcastie. itis thought tone from
between 1858 and 1863. In 1881,
when 11 was.adve - ' ed for sale it
was described "a commodious
and well, situated three=storey.
brick store, and dwelling." The
purchaserin 1883 was John Leslie
who fie/ the previous twenty
years Iiiad been in partnership
with Fred Rumbatl in a carriage
factory on the other side of Huron
Street (see 39).
Mr- Leslie removed the third
storey from ' the Mountcastle
building, added a blacksmith,
shop to the rear on Orange Street,
and resumed the manufacture of,;.
carriages and wagons. The lease
of the blacksmith shop in 1884
was Mr. Tedford who dissolved
his partnership with Jacob, Miller
(see 51) preparatory to mowing to
the new location. The lease in
1854 was Albertaeeley (see 49).
By 1910, .regular production at
the shop seems to have,
diminished, and Mr. Leslie was.
retililing wagons and buggies
manufactured tured elsewhere. In 1913
he died, and it isunderstood that
the premises were taken over by
Mr. Hugh ' Cameron. Mr.
Cameron continued to produce
some wagons, and otherwise ran
a repair service for horsedrawn
vehicles. As this type of business
diminished the establishment by
degrees became a general car-
pentry
arpentry shop.
