In 1878, the site of the preSent
Home Hardware on the west side
of Albert Street was occupied by
a two-storey brick hardware
store occupied by Searle and
Davis. The date of its con-
struction has not been deter-
• mined, but it is known to have
been there in 1875. Adjoining it to
the north was a two-storey brick
•jewelry store operated by J.
Biddlecombe and built by him in
• 1875. Its site had previously heed
occupied by a frame warehouse
• owned• biSearle and Davis. It is
not known whether the
• remainder of the block had
buildings on it.

the Library Park (see 64) was
moved or wholly rebuilt on the”
land closely corresponding to the
grounds of the house at the south.

The new plant consisted of five
buildings. a machine shop, a
paint shop, a work shop and two
sheds which collectively occupied
about half the space of the

In 1862 Alexander McMurchie
and Joseph Chidley had become
partners of Mr. McTaggart, and
by 1882 McMurchie was the sole
owner. He later took D. lyicCorvie
and, A. Mackenzie as partners,
the firm being called McMurchie
and Company. The industry
prospered throughout the wheat.

George Levis bought two of the
