Huron County Trade Martheld
in the Clanton Arena. last
Wednesday, May P,roved .a
disappointing venture at-
txcting only 50 pereent'of the
County's manufacturers.
Bill Hawke, Industrial:
Development -Consultant For
the ministry of industry and
tourism said the Trade Mart
•was ``neither a gigantic success
nor a gigantic failure," but he
personally felt there would not
be another one.
"It was an experiment - the
,first in Ontario and we weren't
sure it would work," he saki.
"The Trade Mart was
organized to be a com-
munication forum, like a
convention, where man
fac-
aturers in Huron County could
_meet informally to find out
what their neighbour's make."
• Mr. Hawke said that many
manufacturers were bringing
raw material in from outside of
the region when they could get
it from within the County if only
they knew who to deal with.
Commenting on the feeling
expressed by some of the 20
exhibitors in attendance that
the Trade Mart was a failure,
Nr Hawke said, "The trouble
tisday is that something isn't
considered successful if you
don't make a buck fromit. The
Trade Mart was setup for the
exchange of ideas not to make
sales or contracts.
Fred Looker of Hearn
Wholesale Ltd., Clinton, said
the Trade Mart failed to attract
more manufacturers because it
"t" was a novel idea.
"It is the first Trade Mart
and people don't know that
_ much about it," he said,ad ad-
ding, that following

more exhibitors. potential.
"The idea has good p
Some people here didn't know
we even existed until they came
`to the Trade Mart," he said.
Pat Newington of XLO-
Wildex, Clinton, said the Trd
MMart. offered "an opportunity
for us to introduce•ourselves to
all the companies in Huron
County," but felt that it
wouldn't accomplish a lot.
"It's company policy to deal
with manufacturers in the
County first before going
outside of the area," he said,
!so, we're, already ,practising
what the Tirade Mart is
preaching."

just over a year, and
representative Don Appleby

Barn
dance
held
Something like the spirit of
1875 was alive and well north of
here on May 24 when a Clinton
area couple hosted a barn
dance, with proceeds going to
the Van Egmond Foundation.
Barb and Bob Batty, who live
on the base line between •
Clinton and Auburn built a
brand new barn this spring,
"and when they had the new
floor in and before they put
stalls in they decided to have a
barn dance," according to
Dorothy Williams, a member of
the Van Egmond group.
"It was fun; a real old
fashioned evening," said Mrs.
Williams. The Holland
Orchestra played for dancing
on a wagon set up just outside
the big,barn doors, and people
could • dance "inside or out",
she said.
A bar was set up on the other
end of the wagon and another
wagon was filled up with food at
the kitchen and pulled out to the
barn by some male volunteers. s
the • barn- dance and Van
Egmond Foundation treasurer
David Ring said about $150 was
raised, which will help restore
the Van Egmond House in
Egrondville.
Mrs. Williams said the Batty
were "community people" who
got interested in the Van
Egmond house when they at-
tended 'the recent Foundation
dance and a card party held at
the home of Gladys Van
Egmond.

Exe=Fibercraft Ltd., Exeter
found a manufacturer of

future rather • than with a
company outside of the region -
concrete prof Bill Hawke
said. dint the Trade Mart can
work.
Fibercraft representative,
Mary Caton said the Trade
Mart was "a fantastic idea*" -
but was disappointed in the
lack of displays. "I don't think
there was enough advertising
for it," he said.

Hawks said the need to bring
the manufacturers together
still remains.
"The Trade Mart isn't as
exciting as we'd like it, f think
we'd bringg more manufac-
turers together if theirineeting
could be arranged around a
dinner. We may try that in
Woodstock." he said.
