The five -mile skating race between John
Vail, of Exeter, and R. Cornyn, of Wingham,
which took place at the latter town on Tues-
day evening last, resulted in a draw, Cornyn
claiming a foul. Cornyn got the start and
kept it for a while, when the Exeter "stager"
caught him and passed on the 75th lap,
when. it is claimed by Vail's backers, and
acknowledged by unprejaniced Winghamites,
that Cornyn threw his foot in front of Vail,
causing himself to stumble, and loosening
his skate, which he took from his foot and
struck the Exeter skater on the leg with,
Ieaviag a mark. The conduct of the Wing -
ham backers towards Vail and those from
Exeter is said to have been -to say the least
-not very gentlemanly. The proprietor of
the rink charged Vail $1.50 for practice.
Tail, who is still the champion of Huron,
would have won the race as easily as he did
the one on the rink here, had not what we
have stated above occurred. We understand
Mr. tail's backers/ have issued a challenge to
the backers of Bob!. Cornyn toskate a five.
mile race, for from $100 to '$500, to take
place either on the Princess Bink,London, or
the Dominion Rink, Exeter, two weeks from
{late of signing papers. As soon as this is
accepted, the issuers of the challenge will
place in W. Hawkshaw's Band's the neces-
sary amount of money to establish good
faith.

A.Perilous Position.
One day last'week two Exeterites went out
into Stephen to get evergreen and maple
trees. They secured a superannuated horse,
and went to the Green farm, where it was
thought some fine specimens could be ob-
tained. They reached the bush with - little
difficulty, loaded their wagon, and in a short
time started for Home. Before the road
could be reached, a amall stream had to be
crossed. When the edge was reached the
two held a consultation as to where would be
the best place to cross the stream. A place
was finally decided upon and a start made,
one driving, while the other walked. a log;
noble horse sank
when about mid -stream the ,
leaving nothing but its head above water,
and in this uncomfortable and `perilous posi-
tion the poor steed had to remain while the
two were discussing what wAs best to be done
under the circumstances, and settling the
.dispute as to who should go into the water
and unhitch the horse. Tho pian on the
bank (although apparently anxious and ex-
cited over the dilemma in which they were
placed) expressed his unwillingness to risk
his life in trying to extricate the animal, and
'nothing remainedqutfoc theyoung ""gallant"
to wade in and unfasten the equine from the
wagon, and save the animal from a watery
grave. While this was going on, the other
persona, who is a keen observer, stood starch
stiff on the bank, no doubt expecting to see
the horse and its rescuer perish in the bil-
lows, A farmer and his team bad then to
,be precured to yank the wagon out. The
firers had also to be loaded tip by the same
person who saved the horse. This done, the
tem "hooked up" and started home, the brav-
er of the two 'tvalking'to prevent himself from
catching cold. They aver that that is the
last load of trees they will gather.

It reviewseall the ideal schemes, put forward

discourses of the ballet and it royal founder,

tales a stroll through old Yeddo, and inter-
ests us in old Japanese life. "The Fruit -

have little idea of the enormous value and

every year to this one port which in this
respect has no rival on earth. 'The Ameri-

Tuesday last, the annual spring show of

The show of agricultural implements was

The annual spring show of this society
was held in the village on Wednesday last,
and, owing to the fine day a large number
of farmers were present. In stallions, the
heavy draughts took the lead, and in the
aged class some fine animals were shown.
The other classes were, more or less, well
reppresented ; but balls were few. On the
wliolo, the fair was a comparative success,
but not by any means what it would 'be if
there were not so many Using held so near
at hand, The directorate deserve credit
for the manner in which they carried out
the proceedings. Fallowing is a list of the
