Mike Penfound is on the left, and Scott Doherty is on the right. Absent were Jim Klozinga and Liz Davidson. (photo s bytJack Hunt) Meet your Centennial band By_ Seamus Doherty I must apologize to you for the break in communications. Last week due to unforeseen circumstances, the article was not ready for publication and as a result, the saxophone section of your band is being presented one week behind schedule. So far, we have presented to you the bass or "heavy brass" section, the trumpet section and the trombone section. Now we are bringing you the saxophone section, which is the first of the reed instruments. There are four, ranges of saxophone, each with its own peculiar quality. Yet, all of these, the soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone "sax" have a common purpose, and that is to provide a special richness to tone to the band. The "sax", like the trumpet, has been developed by various proponents into a very ex- pressive solo instrument. It has maintained its great popularity throughout the eras' of JIxieland and progressive azz, into modern ballroom dancing of the "Big Band" days and the "Rock and Roll" era which is still with us today. Although those are the styles of music which brought the saxophone to the fore as a solo instrument, the instrument itself was developed and used as a tie between the brass and the reed instruments. Its use in orchestral or marching bands is important because of its tonal qualities which as I have previously stated is the all important link between the brass section and the reed section. - . So, as you can see, this in- strument forms a very ef- fective musical bridge which in turn enhances the overall sound of the band. You the public, can enhance the sound of your band. Give it your encouragement and support. Get your Stanley Cup Tickets now Don't be left out. $700 in prizes.
