Mr. Stewart's statement follows the speech tabled in the Legislature on March 26 by Bon. Dennis R. Timbrell, Minister of Energy for Ontario, in which he stressed the need for the Province to take action necessary to ensure a reduction in its total demand for energy in the years ahead. "Ontario currently imports 80 percent of its total energy requirements, and has one of the highest per capita rates of energy consumption , in the world," Mr. Timbrell said. "By the early 1980's there will no longer be sufficient crude oil to rpeet Canadian feedstock requirements west of ' the Ottawa, Valley. An even more. alarmig fact is that Canadian - produced natural gas supplies are already beginning to fall short of total Canadian needs and committed exports." The goals of the Government Energy Management Program include the improved management of energy distribution and consumption, and the encouragement of voluntary `conservation across the Province. The Program will coordinate, on a long-term basis, energy management projects undertaken by other ministries, industries and the public to reduce the rate of growth in energy consumption in Ontario by one-third over the next five years, resulting in a cutback in total energy ex- penditures by about one billion dollars a year by 1980: Outlining the steps to be taken by his Ministry, Mr. Stewart said the primary ob- jective would be to encourage the reduction of energy con- surription in farm operations across the Province. Well, it doesn't have to be that way. There are a number of things you can do to save on meat. The first step is to get tO know your butcher. And, more importantly, get him to know and like you. He knows more about his selection of meats than anybody else, and he can steer you towards the.real bar- gains and away from the los- e e ers. And if he is acquainted 447 e with the size 0 ope of your Tam- ily, hecan sug- a -e gest items es- pecially suited to your needs. It's a good idea though, to go in with a good working knowledge of meats. I'd suggest reading the booklet "101 Meat Cuts." It's available from the National Live Stock and Meat Board, 365 Wabash Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60603. It costs 500, and it's well worth it. One surefire way to save on Wit- is to buy--the.leas:ex .. ,-_--...... sive cuts. Chuck roast and round steak. have just as Much flavor as the more expensive cuts. All they lack is tenderness, which y you can add with any commer- cial meat tenderizer or your own marinade. And one last hint. When you're at the supermarket, make the meat department your last stop. An empty shopping cart makes it easier to buy too much meat. • Readers' questions are wel- come and should be sent to Box 5857, London, Ontario. e propane each year" to dry 100 million bushels of corn."
