CHILD BEHAVIOR ON THE ROAD Most children stop at a crossing first before progressing across the road. Unfortunately, even after stopping first, most children then run across, recent studies indicate. Some walk, 'but start running when they see a car coming. The fact that most stop first indicates that they probably try to act correctly, suggests the Ontario Safety League, but are unable to take in the entire situation and act Chlorinated water Many questions have been asked regarding Vanastra and the ministry of the en- vironment. First, chlorination of our water supply. Policy of the ministry is that any water pumped by the ministry of the environment and consumed by the public is to be chlorinated. I am aware of the usefulness chlorine plays as a safety factor, but is it necessary at Vanastra? Clinton and Vanastra use the. same water from artesian wells, Clinton, because they are served by their local PUC do not use chlorine in their water supply. There is no need. At Vanastra, the ministry suggests our pipes and storage tanks are old, therefore, chlorine . additives are a precaution. How old are pipes in other towns? Clinton, our com- parative example, is celebrating her centennial tnow. , The press has published • recent research by United States that suggests chlorine may be medically harmful; therefore, besides the bad taste, chlorine may be a chemical pollutant. If you wish to voice your feelings re chlorination 'of our water supply at Vanastra write: ministry of the environment, utilities operation section, London regional office, 985 SPRING ROAD CONDITIONS Humps in the road are a big problem, particularly in nor- thern Ontario in the spring, says the Ontario Safety League. They are caused by' drastic weather changes and there's not much you can do about them. The highway department erects `bump' signs, but frequently you find the humps before either the signs go up or work crews can repair the road damage. When you see the. signs, slow down, keep both hands on the wheel. Safety belts will help keep you behind the wheel should you be the first to discover a new hump. Adelaide St, 'Sr ,ondorl, Ontario: • Sewage With regard to the ministry of the environment and our sewage. Vanastra can develop according to the original zoning plans. Plan 22 residential: All serviced lots from Halifax Road east to Andrew Court can be developed in the residential area of Vanastra. Plan 23 industrial: Land from Halifax Road west to Highway 4 are zoned for light, dry in- dustry. As ,you see, we can continue to develop what we always . could. Brownies Thank you for the response for interested Brownie leaders. Plans are favourable for a group at Vanastra by Sep- tember, for the age group, 10 to 14 years. Anyone interested in leadership should contact Donna Wood 482-7744. Cancer month April is Cancer month and the Cancer Society has fund- raising campaigns throughout the month. Money raised is used for research, medical supplies and transportation of cancer patients to clinics. At Vanastra, the ladies have already been to your door. The team captain of the Vanastra Cancer.
