Q: I know that when you go
abroad thehotel clerks take
your passport. Is this a
problem for unmarried
couples travelling together/
— D.C., Columbia, S.C.
A: Nothing to worry about,
apparently. But those with
experience offer some
suggestions: The man's
passport is usually the only
one they ask for, so don't offer
both. If the clerk insists,
however, say the woman's
passport dates from before the
marriage (or from an earlier
marriage, if it's a Mrs.). Have
matching luggage. Act
married — that is, be arguing
as you approach the desk.
Easiest countries are the
Catholic and Arab ones;
toughest are Scotland,
Holland and Switzerland. Bon
voyage!
