Like the Ms "Most
Wanted list," the home-
maker of today has' an-
other lust the Ten Most
'Unwanted - those house
hold pests that, invade the
home without invitation.
According to the Na-
tional Pest Control Asso-
ciation, a. non-profit or-
ganization of pest control
companies that specialize
in >controlling rodents and
insects in and' around
structures, these unwel.-
come, 'guests do an esti-
mated $4.5 billion in dam-
age every year. Even worse,
many household pests
actually endanger your
family's health.
Unfortunately, even the
cleanest house on the . •
block can be, arid often is,
visited by unwanted pests.
Household pests are not
strictly regional. or sea-
sonal. Modern climate
control enables pests to
exist and multiply indoors
all year. Rodent problems,
however, increase in au-
tumn when low tempera-
tuures drive rats and mice
inside seeking food and
shelter. Roaches hitchhike
into homes in grocery bags.
Other insects ride in on
shoes or clothes. Clearly,
pest control is a year-
round job no matter where
you live. Effective pest
control is more than a
grocery store spray, a fly
swatter, and a mouse trap.
The fundamental prob-
lem: pests thrive on food,
warmth and water—three
elements that make your
home livable.
Since you cannot elimi-
nate these basic appeals,
concentrate on preventive
measures:
• Frequently clean'
possible pest hiding
places and breeding
spots — cracks and
crevices in floors, base-
boards, vents,' under
staircases, etc.
• Dispose of all debris
and garbage daily.
• Screen outside doors
and windows and close
outside cracks and crev-
ices where pests can
enter your home. ,
• Buy only small quan-
tities of food you seldom
use. Store fond in tight
containers which insects
cannot invade.
• Clean up crumbs and
spilled foods.
• Inspect incoming
grocery bags and soft
drink containers. Pay
particular attention to
produce packages.
If you use pesticides,
remember:
• All pesticides are po-
tentially harmful is mis-
used.
• Purchase only pesti-
cides bearing Environ- '
mental Protection Agen-
cy (EPA) registration
numbers and. registered
'for the use which you
intend for it. These
products are effective,
safe and not harmful
to the environment if
used as directed.
• Read label before you
b buy pesticides. " Follow
directions. Don't use in-

garden insects, for ex-
ample.
• Store unused pesti-
cides where children
cannot reach them. Dis-
pose of properly and
carefully:
Why you need profes-
sional help, call in an
expert. Pest Control pro-
fessionals receive special-
ized training to solve your
pest problems safely with-
in the context of your
home and natural envi-
ronment.
pesky visitors
THE TEN MOST UNWANTED household pests according
to the National Peet Control Association: 1. cockroach
2. house .mouse 3. Norway rat 4. subterranean termite
5. house ant 6. carpenter ant 7. flea 8. brown dog tick
9. spider 10. Silverfish. .
KITCHEN REMODELING
More than 4 million
kitchens were remodeled
last year alone, according
to the National Home Im-
provement Council, under-
scoring that America's -fa-
vorite 'remodeling project
continues to be kitchen re-
modeling. Most home ac-
tivity is in the kitchens.
Latest. in appliances:
the new energy -savers
When the homeowner
decides to improve his
home ' he will find some
surprising innovations in
appliances. One energy-
saving refrigerator/freez-
er uses aboltt a third less
electricity than other
models not equipped with
its special thermostatical-
ly controlled motor.
While it is true that the
amount of electricity con-
sumed by the refrigerator
- each operating hour .is a
modest amount, it's also
true that the amount of
electricity consumed 24
hours around the clock for
365 days adds up to a sub-
stantial figure.
The higher price tags
on these models are offset
by operating savings over
a long period of time.
Gas ranges equipped
with mini -pilots or hypo-
dermic pilots, named after
the very fine hollow hypo-
dermic needle, consume
much less gas than older
' models. Also, heat from
pilot lights .makes the
house thatmuch warmer,
requiring less output from
the central heating sys-
tem.
There are dramatic de-
velopments in the produc-
tion ,sof "high -efficiency"
air conditioning units,
available in capacities
ranging from 5,500 to 27,-
000 BTUs (British Thermal
Units) . Basically, high -
efficiency air conditioning
is a term applied to air.
conditioners =which pro-
duce more cooling per
watt of • electricity con-
sumed than standard air
conditioners of the same
capacity.
Cooling is also meas-
ured in BTUs. The ratio of
BTUs per watt is called
the Energy Efficiency Ra-
tio. Air conditioners which
produce eight or more
BTUs of cooling per watt
are considered to be high -
efficiency models. These
units cost less to operate
and help conserve power.
