British -produced film called
'Murder in the Family'. More
than a dozen British movies
followed before Roddy went to
the U.S. and became a con-
tract player for 20th Century -
Fox. At the age of twelve,
Roddy reached star status in
the 'U.S. with his moving
appearance in 'How Green
Was My Valley'. As one of
Hollywood's busiest actors, .
Roddy appeared in such
impressive classics as 'The
Pied Piper', 'My Friend
Flicka', `Lassie Come Home'
and 'Kidnapped'. Fighting
being constantly being
typecast in child roles, he
turned his back on Hollywood -
made films and his attention
to the Broadway- stage. He
enjoyed numerous successes
there including a 1960 Tony
Award for 'The Fighting Cock'
and his memorable per-
formance in 'Camelot' op-
posite Richard Burton and
Julie Andrews. He originated
his role of Galen, the in-
telligent chimp in the 1968
movie 'Planet of the Apes' and
the three sequels on which the
ill-fated. television series was
based. Roddy was the only
carry over from the movie
versions of the 'Apes' concept.
Along with his impressive
acting career, Roddy
McDowall has made a name
for himself as a magazine
photographer and has even
published his own book
'Double Exposure'. He is a
devoted bachelor and owns
homes in both Los Angeles and
the New York area.
