Children from kindergarten
to grade 3 in. all Huron -Perth
separate schools will be Jn-
troduced to Celly, a cartoon
character developed by the
Canadian Cancer Society to
promote health awareness, the
Huron -Perth separate school
board decided at their meeting
in Seaforth last week.
Trustees watched a
presentation on Celly by Isabel
Rubin and Marybelle Ford of
the Cancer Society's Ontario
Education division and were
apparently so impressed by
n the
,
program's anti-sm g
message that no one ; iii the
room lit up a cigarittte until
about an hour after the ladies
finished their talk.
Celly tells children what' a
healthy body is and how to take
care of it and reaches them at a
young age before smoking and
other bad health habits are
formed, the Cancer Society
workers said. The program has
been effective in many Ontario
schools since it was launched
this fall. "We've had a little
trouble getting the program
into , the tobacco areas, but
we're still trying," Mrs. Rubin
said.
Director of education, John
Vintar, called the Celly
program imaginative and said

a variety of skills including
language, puppetry and
composition.
The board voted -unanimously
to ask. the Cancer Society to
bring the program to all its
schools.
Therapist
available in
Huron County
Services of a -speech therapist
will be available for children in
the Huron County Schools of the
HPRCSS Board, who have been
assessed as needing speech
correction, following a move by
the HPRCSS Board last week.
The Board adopted a
recommendation from
Assistant Superintendent
Joseph Tokar that they hire a
practising therapist to conduct
a clinic for perhaps six Huron
children who are involved on
Saturday mornings for about
three hours.
Children in the Board's Perth
schools who have speech
problems can be referred to the
Perth County Speech Clinic in
Stratford. This Clinic is
operated by the London
Crippled Children's Centre and
serves only Perth children.
The therapist will conduct the
clinic at a central location in
Huron and parents will drive
,;;;;...;,;,..-....theirchildren there..
Mr. Tokar said he hoped -to
have more concrete proposals
on an ongoing speech correc-
tion- program -that -could serve
the children in the Board's
schools in the Spring.
Children with speech
problems were identified as a
result of a diagnostic survey
conducted in the Board's Huron
schools by Dr. Seppo Tuomi of
the University of Western
Ontario.
