While digging through the
files at Maitland Valley,
Rocky Raccoon uncovered
some facts which people
seldom consider about snow.
Most of us know that snow
is frozen water in a variety
of small, crystallized forms,
and that it is good for'
making snowmen. Some
other common properties of
snow include the necessity of
- shovelling it from
driveways, ' its association
with cold weather and higher
heating bills and its teli-
dency to allow you • to get
your car stuck.
What most people seem to
forget, is that snow is a very
important commodity in the
workings of nature. , The
depth of snow and the nature -
of the nast, or crust,
determine how, when, and
where many animals get
their food during the winter.
The insulating' capacity of
snow keeps warmth near the
earth to protect seedlings
and to keep insects and
certain young animals alive
through • freezing surface
temperatures. Even man, in
northern climates, uses the
compaction and insulating
qualities of snow to build 'an
effective shelter against the
attack of sharp, hexagonal
snow "needles", (which are
formed in colder climates),.
and saves him from harsh
Arctic temperatures.
Snow increases the light
reflecting capacity of the.
Earth during winter months.
It sends the sun's rays back
into the clouds where the
energy is reflected a second
time by Earth's atmosphere,
and is returned to the sur-
face as heat energy. This
process known as the
"Green House. Effect" helps
the growth of plants and.
depends largely on the
reflecting quality of the

snowshoes have v+ ntributed
greatly to the history of
Canada,
The Algonquin, Huron and
Ojihway Indians were just
some of the trih.e.sthat used
wood and animal skins to
make snowshoes. These
shoes which allowed man to
walk over the snow without
sinking through it, aided the
Indians in their winter
hunting and trapping of food
and fur animals.
The military used
snowshoe's O. necessary
p'iocc of equipment in the
Canadian winters, and soon
after the country became'
more civilized, snowshoe
clubs were formed. Men
would seek gut trails for
recreation and a chance for
social interaction during the
winter months.

too much when wet.
Snowshoes break easily, so
don't try to jump fences or
support yourself across
ditches with them.............
