I' m, trying' to•.b'ring back -a bit more of myself. I snuffed but the real Cornelia for a while, but now I do more things and travel more by myself." Whatever George Wallace does, watch Cornelia Wallace run for office — soon. Will you please tell me what I'm doing wrong? This Is the third note I've written but never a word printed . . . one more time: where is 'Jennie', John - Boy's girl friend on 'The Waltons'? I think your column is excellent for everyone but me! — Mrs. J.L.G., Montreal, Que. CBS's award-winning 'The Waltons' premiered on Sept. 14, 1972, following the airing the previous year of a two-hour special 0. called 'The Homecoming' starring Patricia Neal, Andrew Duggan and Richard Thotnas. Viewers' and critics' reactions were such that network programming chief Fred Silverman ordered a weekly series. The storylines have been built around John -Boy (Richard Thomas) and the Walton family; there are `no stars' and yet everyone is a 'star'. "This exciting character relationship study is un- doubtedly the show's success. Now to make amends — `Jennie' was merely a friend of John - Boy's; at no time has creator - producer Earl Hamner Jr. in- tended to tie the eldest Walton boy down — scope was the key word, room for a character to develop. Now that John -Boy finds himself at university, storylines just might finally offer John -Boy a more serious romantic relationship. Is `Planet of the Apes' really being taken off the television? It would be senseless to take off a good show and leave on other not as • good! — Mrs. J., Edmonton, Alberta. Over the past two seasons the CBS Television Network aired the original `Planet of the Apes' theatrical movie (1968) and all the sequels to rave reviews not to mention high ratings. So it stood to reason a weekly series based on the same storyline _.would be a staggering success to say the least — especially if Galen himself, actor Roddy McDowall, were signed for the show. Right? Wrong! There's one thing certain in the land of television . there's nothing certain! Big name movie stars have bombed terribly on television in past years, 'box office hit movies have done poorly when aired on tv and a successful theatrical movie `ain't' necessari=ly going to make it on the small screen as a series. 'Apes', with. all its required . make-up time and elaborate chimp costumes, carried an expensive price tag: a reported $230,000 per hourion.g episode. A tremendous creative effort" poured into the 20th Century -Fox production but to little avail — the ratings were next to shameful. And another sure-fire series concept went down the drain. You are my last hope —' I have been trying very hard to •get the address of James Franciscus on 'Hawaii Five -O'. — Cindy T.. Winnipeg, Man. Right show — wrong James! 'Hawaii Five -O' stars J,ick Lord as Steve McGarrett and James MacArthur as has assistant Danny Williams. MacArthur, the son of actress Helen Hayes and the late playwright Charles MacArthur, is married to the beautiful Melody Patterson (Wrangler Jane on the old 'F PAGE 3 with Jerry Appleton Troop' • series). Write: 'Hawaii Five -O', CBS -TV, 7800 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, Calif. I would like to know one thing: who plays Dick Van Dyke's wife on TV? — Mrs. J.R., Ottawa, Ont. Which time? Comedian. Dick Van Dyke has been blessed with two very lovely tv `wives' over the past dozen years. Between the years 1961 and •1966, Mary Tyler Moore was 'married' to Van Dyke on the original 'Dick Van Dyke Show' starring Morey Amsterdam and Rose Marie. Of course, 'Mrs. Laura Petrie' is now familiar to us as bachelor - girl Mary Richards. Dick Van Dyke returned to weekly - television in 1971 as Dick Preston. The beautiful Hope Lange (Mrs. -Muir of 'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir' some seasons back.) was signed to olay Jenny Preston. Also featured in 'The New Dick Van Dyke Show' were, at one time or other, Marty Brill, Fannie Flagg and Nancy Dussault until they Were • replaced by Barbara •IRash, Henry Darrow and Dick Van Patten. The series was cancelled at the conclusion of its third season. The original 'Dick Van Dyke Show' is still to be seen in syndication across the continent. I really enjoy the old reruns of. 'Bonanza' ... could you tell me about Dan Blocker? — H.C., London, Ont. The late Dan Blocker por- trayed the cheerful character Hoss Cartwright on NBC's long- running `Bonanza' for twelve years • since the tv western premiered in '59. The Texas - born actor earned himself a Master degree in English and taught high school before tur- ning to acting. Previous to the 'Bonanza' series, Blocker had had a bit part in a theatrical movie ('Black Lace') as well as playing numerous 'heavies' on such tv, shows as `Gunsmoke', 'Wagon Train' and John Payne's 'The Restless Gun'. Dan Blocker died in 1972. 41.
