HUNTING THE WREN

Once upon a time in Ireland, the
wren was hunted and killed on Christ-

('hristmas trees and cribs,' within
laespective spheres of influence, provide
focal points for observances of -the
season.
Various legends claim to tell the
story of the first Christmas tree; actu-
ally, evergreen decorations were so
closely associated 'with pagan celebi .-
tions that they were banned by many
ecclesiastics of the early church.'
Aecordinu to literature, the first
Christmas tre€t was set up at ,SStras-
bonl'g, Germnaany, 111 161)1; eyell then,
the cry rosy against heathen customs
and, as late as 1851, the Ravi. Henry
Schwan was severely criticized for
set ting up a Christmas tree in his
church in Cleveland, Ohio.'
St. Francis -of Assisi received t3pecial
permission from the Pope to present a
tableau of the nativity scene. This
firstcrib, set up at Greccio, Italy, in
12 23, was an ilrrmecltate sensation; the
renaissance endowed the cribs with
ornate pageantry and, modernly, the
crib is to southern Europe and Cath-
olic countries what the tree - is to
America and northern lands. -
Eiglrteerith century Italians were
fond of a fanitttstic decoration called
the Ceppo. Pyramidical In construc-
tion, the ('eppi were made on a frame-
work of lathes with transverse shelves
rising to three or four stories, depend-
ing on the over-all size of the Ceppo.
The whole thing was covered with
eolored paper, tufts, tassels, fringes,
tiny pine cones, and little flags; a
manger scene was represented on the
lowest, shelf, while the upper ones Were
roverf1d with small • gifts, etc.; wax
taper( were played along theaides and
i large gilt cone ornamented the top.
Although tate original designer prob-
ably never saw a Christmas tree, the
Ceppo—aided qby a little imagination
bridges the gap between Christie a
cribs and trees.
