The bells, are ringing for our Princess
and her consort whose, wedding is the
talk of the world today. We all wish
these happy people "the I very best."
May they enjoy many years sof wedded
bliss. -
We believe this solemn occasion will
have a strong effect upon the high,
sense of duty, good morale and genuine
home -planning of 'our young folk who
are planning matrimony. To them we
extend our blessings too.
Christmas plans are also being dis-
cussed now. Many hope' to travel great
distances to their homes, while others
are looking forvesvd to entertaining the
family at Koine. kor theg hostess, 'fruit
cake is an -essential all illiring the holi-
day week. To have a mellow flavor,
the Christmas cake and pudding should
be baked now and stored carefully.
After the cake and pudding have been
cooled, wrap in two thicknesses of wax
paper and store in a tin or wooden box
that has A tight., cover.. Place an
orange or apple in the box, but replace
it every four or five days. This pre-
vents the contents of the box from
dryinout.
PLAIN LIGHT FRUIT CAKE
One lb. butter, 1 lb. granulated
sugar, •9 eggs, separated, 1 ib.
sultana raisins, % ib. citron peel,
% 1b, blanched almonds, 1 lemon,
juice and rind, 5 cups sifted flour,
1/2 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. baking powder.
Cream the butter, add sugar and
cream thoroughly: Add the beaten
egg yolks. Wash the raisins, shred the
peel and flour them. with part of the
measured flour. Add the sifted , dry
ingredients. Fold in the floured fruit
together with the lemon rind and juice..
Lastly fold in the stiffly beaten egg
whites. -. Line two tins with brown
paper, then waxed paper. GTease
thoroughly. Pour in the batter and
bake in a preheated blectric oven of
275 defrees for four hours, or until a
steel needle inserted into centre comes
out- quite -clean.

VIRGINIA FRUIT PARI,
Three-quarters lb. butter, % 4b,
brown sugar, ala lb. mixed peel, 1
ib. sultana raisins, 1 lb. currants,- .
8 eggs, 1/3 cup cherry jibes, 331 lb.
almonds, 1 ib. flour (Le., 2% cups) ,
% tsp. cream of tartar, 1/2 lb.
'cherries, 1/; tsph-,^rose water, 3/2
tsp. orange extract, 1/4 cup grape
juice. .
Cream the butter, add sugar and
beaten eggs. Cream very thoroughly.
Shred and peel; cut cherries, wash
raisins and currants, blanch and
brown the almonds. Add the floured
fruit, and fold in the sifted dry in-
gredients alternately with the liquids.
Prepare the greased, lined tins. Pour
in batter. Bake in a preheated electric
oven for about 4% hours at 275 de-
grees (no higher temperature),.
CARROT PUDDING
One cup grated raw carrots, 1
eup grated "raw potato, 1 cup
chopped' suet, 1 cup brown Sugar,
1 cup raisins, 1 cup currants, 11/2
cups flour, 1 tsp. baking soda, 1/2
tsp. salt.
Mix and sift dry ingredients, then
mix all together, Place in greased
mould having mould two-thirds full.
Cover loosely -,with parchment paper.
Place in . steamer and steam three
hours. You may add one tsp. cinna-
-mou, one-half tsp. nutmeg, one-quarter
tsp. cloves if you like it spiced, or add
1 tsp. almond fiovoring, one-half cup
chopped, blanched ).almonds and - one-
haIf cup mixed peel. For a still richer
pudding, add one-half cup Flazed
cherries, one-half cup chopped candle
peel, one-half cup chopped dates. In
either case add an extra tablespoon of
flour to the mixture. It's a sort of
fool -proof pudding, so develop your
own special brand.

Rules for Successful Cake Baking
-1. Have all° necessary utensils, and
ingredients ready before • beginn-ing to
mix cake, and make sure' that the
oven is at proper temperature when
cake is ready to be baked.
2. A round bottonkhowl and a wooden
spoon are two suit le utensils.
3. X11 ingredients 'should be fresh
and of good quality.
4. Fine granulated sugar or soft
brown sugar makbs a line textured
cake. Sift coarse white sugar.
5. Fruits and nuts should be
thoroughly cleaned and allowed to dry,
then dredge• with one-qtf:mer of the
flour before adding to other ingredients:
6. Fruit cakes take a lot of stirring'
to distribute the materials and should
be poured into tins lined with two or
three—thicknesses—of oiled paper
-7. Place cakes on rack one-third to
one-half of the distafice from bottom
element. Do not use top element dur-
ing baking and do not open door.
18. A small tin- containing 1/, cup of
water on the oven, rack keeps. cakes
moist.
9. When baked. cake shrinks from,
the pan, or if; bone knitting needle is
inserted -into the middle of cake and
comes out perfectly clean, it is certain
that cake is baked.
10. Do not turn fruit cakes out of
pan.

• Ashfield W.M.S. The November
meeting of the W.M.S. of Ashfielc
Presbyterian church was held at the
home of Miss Sadie Johnston.- - Mrs
Neil G. MacKenzie Was in charge of
the program. After the opening hymn
prayer was offered by Mrs. Geo., Col-
linson. Mrs. Isabel MacKenzie took
charge while business was discussed.
Mrs. D. A. MacLean read a • paper on,
"The People's hook" .The Bible and
the roll call was, answered vfrh the
name of a book of the Bible.. The
"Glad Tidings" prayer was offered by
Mrs. Wm. Johnston and the reading
from tile! study' book on India was
given 'by Mrs. 11. MacLean. Mrs, Wm.
Berry -read a short poem. Mrs. Neil
Cr. MacKenzie, Mrs. 1), R. MacKenzie,
Mrs, E., Rowes and' a .rs. Duncan Mac-
Kenzie •retad a, prayer of thanks for
each season of the year. After the
conclusion of the meting the hostess
served, a dainty lunch. There Was an
attendance of twenty-six. The ladies
of the Ashfield W.M.S. had as visitors
Mrs. Chas. Boyd, Mrs. I+lliott Car-
ruthers, Mrs. Tom Robb, Mrs John'
Bradley, Mrs. Maori' Iiradley,and baby
Phyllis, from Reici's Corner United
church.

next, meeting. Donations were re-

to be presented to Princess Elizabeth.

of the intentions of some who support
