Sermon to Florida Congregation
ARTICLE VI
oWiaat a -'wonderful " age this' is- in
which we are living! Journeying from
Monday noon until the following. Fri-
day evening, Henrietta hacl brought lis
through one Canddlan province, and
six states of "the "Union" without n
syllable of dissent; every need of the
traveller anticipated en route and fully
suet. 1 have a feeling, however; that
she vl•as a tired lady and. readily con-
selitced to nose her wady into the garage
and cool off a 'little bit.
By this time all three of us were
quite prepared to forget for a while
the piloting of the mechanical steed
and settle down from the excitement
of the outward journey. After an
appetizing supper -on the eveniug of
our arrival we retired to rest quite
sure that we were safe under the
Stars and Stripes. "God bless
.America!"
We were about reasonably early
the next nhorn, ilag desirous of . redis-
covering the function Of our "laud -
legs" and also to "do up the town."
The city orf Stuart is ideally located on
the shore -line of the Atlantic Ocean
about 110 miles north of the city of
Miami,/ The Indian River questions
the right of the Atlantic billows ,to
the- exclusive &! fections of the
"•Stuartonians," for it bows between
Stuart and the shore -line of the
majestic oeeau. This fresh water cor-
ridor teems with fish of all varieties;
indeed, one could see them disporting
in the waters. turning somersaults in
the air with their shiny scales reflect-
ing the glistening sheep of the Florida
sun. -Sunny" Florida is no misnomer,
for this Southern State has copious
supplies of the ultra -violet ray.
Throughout the hours of the day
and night modern disciples, of Isaac
Walton could be seen tantalizing the
tinny tribe with Pouch success. It was
more than interesting seeing the negro

A word about the name of the city
itself. Tradition hos it that original-
ly it bore the appellation Of "Potsdam,"
apparently receiving, its mltinI impetus
from settlers of Dutch. German ex-
traction: Of 'course there 'is unassail-
able evidence that°the I:Inglishnlan was
dation. However, let us Ire grateful,
for at least food`sis procurable even
though the price is.iiigb. This prompts
the writer to say that, exclusive o£'
certain isolated rural areas Brough
which he passed, we found people well
nourished and equally well clad, the
colowd as well as their white brethren.
First Sunday Morning In Start
Our first Sunday morning in Stuart
found us ready to meet °ta brandnew
congregation. As a prelude to our
coming the minister of the church
had been kindly, in his introduction;
thus we found a kindly and au eager-
ly expectant people. Asked by a friend•
what the Canadian parson's feelings
were when he first faced Uncle Saui's
people, the answer was forthcoming in
the following:
A few_ years ago the writer was a
delegates to the Toronto Conference of
the . United Church of Canada when
the devotional speaker was Dr. Kerr,
from Shadyside 'Presbyt.erian church,
Pittsburg. The honor of introducing
the eminent speaker had -been dele-
gated to Dr. David McLellan, beloved
'pastor of the Timothy Eaton memorial
church, Toronto. Dr. McLellaan cited
an experience of Dr. Kerr's when on
as certain --Sunday morning the Presi-
dent of the United States attended for
worship. There had been no rehearsal,
nor any intimation that such a dis-
tinguished visitor was to worship at
"Shadyside," and the officials, thinking
that Dr. Kerr might be put off his
stride if not informed, hurried into the
vestry to inform hint. Dr. Kerr, as
imperturbable as ever and' equally
kind, opined, "Just another hell -de-
serving sinner like * iurselves s' Na-
turally Dr. • Kerr did not. intend this
to be offensive, but rather the revealing -
of sound theology that, irrespective of
social lhrestige or position, man's spirit
in all its nakedness must appear be:
fore the scrutiny of God. Hazarding
a guess, the writer would suppose that
the Most. humble spirit bowed in the
presence of the I'nseen that morning
would be that possessed by the chief
executive of the nation. Humanity
irrespective of - its '.color or clime or
culture is one before its Maker. -
Thus my preaching to this. new flock
in First Methodist church,' Stuart, oc-
casioned no • undue concern, for in
keeping with My own people in victoria
street. I sensed-t'heir ultimate and
inunediate need' of -God. In •the realm
of the spirit's needs there is no color

readers. but then"T really can't, help it.

The interior is very chaste and simple
in design and shade and worshipful
throughout. A beautiful pipe organ

excellent chola•,, not large numerically,-
but

blended give balance and dignity to the
whole;
• How these Southerners can sing!
One Would naturally suppose because
of their slow, languid speech that in
the realin of chorala• anusie the tempo
would suffer. Not a bit Of it; their
artistry is superb and they revel -in it
--no raspy accent such as the North-
erner naturally gives. What about
church attendance? This was the off-
season as far as the church was con-
cerned, for tourists Were sick home
in their Northern clines, with the
"homesters" , holding the fort until they'
should return in the fall. There is a
tine men's Bible `class in this church
which meets las an integral part of
the Sunday . school ; this would be
worth copying here in our Goderich
c•hilrches. The senior women have a
similar set-up. The writer sat in on
a given Sunday morning with the
men 'and listened to the teacher' ex-
poluhdilig the lesson. " From observa-
tions made by members of the class
there was evidenced a seriousness re-
flecting the unsettled state of the world.
Religion, especially that of P Jesus
Christ, was meant not alone to be
realist -1e but also radiant. Honest •
