PIGEONS FLY FROM PORT HOPE
The .,Goderich homing 'Pigeon Club
held the fifth race of •the season for
Young birds from Port Hope, a distance
by air of 171 miles. The pigeons were
liberated at 7.30 a.m, ana owners of
the first ten birds to reach their home
lofts are as follows: lst Wm. Baker,
12.27; 2nd E. Peachey, 12.35; 3rd Wm.
Pitblado, 12.37; 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and

6011 . at the school on, Tuesday evening,
with the new president, Airs. C. Baxter,
in the chair. There. was a good at-
tendance, the percentage of fathers be-
ing good, but not as high as this As-
sociation holies to reach in the near
future. Miss Ruth Westbrook gave to
fine piano solo, and Master Jack Allen
au excellent vocal solo, accompanied
by 'Mrs. McDougall. Th(2 Parents'
Code of Ethics read in unison, followed
by the Parents'•,Ilymn, was impressive.
The banner for the largest, attendance
of parents went td Miss HQ(Igins' room.
The speaker waa Mr. J. C. Peters,
who. presented some aspects of the
recreation problem sor ietimes over-
looked by the casual observer. In
three years' work in the Rosemount
district of Montreal, a juvenile de-
linquency hot -spot, delinquency, said
M. Peters, hadbeen reduced ninety-
five per cent. under a recreation pro-
gram. In anal"lyzing the situation here,
there were, he said various contribut-
ing factors, some good, some not so
good—there was a keen interest ' in
sport, specialized sport: there w-axb a
high cultural level, particularly in
music; there was individual handcraft,
not organized; there was adequate
recreation for limited groups, bridge,
golf, bowling, etc.; there was a lack
of modern facilities for recreation,

Shell Company' Plans Expansion
'A letter from the Shell Oil Company
regarding plans for the enlarging- of
the company's facilities in Goderich
referred to the' -proposal for the de-
velopment of la,_I on the north side'of
the harbor for in .austrial purposes and
intimated that if, ,is scheme were car-
ried out the- c u any could use 'ap-
proximately four acres, with a water
frontages. This was referred to com-
mittee of the whole Council:

chiuery Company regarding the Vic-
toria-st. foundry' property was received!

Many new faces are seen in the
halls and many old, familiar ones too..
Once more grade IX 'is overflowing
with eager pupils, who often get slight-
ly bewildered as to which room is
which. and are. mystified by many other
ways of Collegiate life.

Several elassrooms have gone
through a face-lifting process and now
present a bright, cheery appearance.

Another change involves the school
library, which formerly . was on the
third floor but now is housed at the
rear of Mrs. Diggon's ,room. That
eliminates one flight of stairs, much to
the delight of everyone. -

Girl Guides. Victoria Park play -
'ground area was established this sum-
mer, and the money spent on it aver-
aged about 10eper child, for those who
used it.' It still needed a wading pool
and some other equipment, -and the
town should have several other such
.areas, so children would ha',e one with-
in. about half -a -mile of their, homes.
"A community," said the speaker, "can
have any type of recreation facilities
it Wants; if it works together for it
through the recreation council." •
Mrs. Hill moved a vote of thanks to
the speaker and the visiting artists,
after which the meeting. was closed
with the Notional Anthem. A social
half-hour was spent over a dainty.

The Recreation Director -
A letter from the Goderich Lions
Club was with regard to the recreation
program in connection :with which the
Club had obligated itself to pay the
salary of the recr'eatioiial director for
a year, to October 15th next. The
directors- of the' Club, it was stated,
believed that the employment of :a
recreational. director should he cson-
'tinued ; that the .pliui would be more
successful if a governing council rspre-
seiatative of, the town were in charge,
and that it .was not in the best interest
of .the plan to have the financial sup-
port come from one organization. The'
Club desired t() 'assist with .any pro-
gram which will provide leadership in
recreation for the youth of the town."
This matter "also went- to committee
of the. whole.

'• - lt. Darrow, president of the Mait-
land Golf Club, pointing out- that'the
Town had "failed altogether to repair
the -road leading to the Golf Club

annual track and "field meet, which
is to be held near the, end of Septem-
ber, so that all who ..wish may enter
the W.O.S.S.A; • .meet at Mitchell on
October 8. There will be many creak-
ing, squeaking, stiff -limbed athletes
hobblin-g about the halls for a few days,
until they get in shape Once more.
