Labor Leader Speaks
After the parade, the members of
.the labor unions assembled around the
-bandstand in Court House Park, to -
hear an address by •Rassell Harvey of
,Toronto, represeatativj of the Am-
eriCan Federation of Labor and labor
member on the Ontario. Labor Rein-.
Mr. Harvey W118 . by
ForeSt MacHardy,.ptesident of .the
local Trades and 'Labe)! Council. He
praised the international unions and
organizations on their splendid demon-
stration on Labor's national holiday.
his address he analyzed • the situ-
'Ation• confronting .workers and spoke
of what was • needed to make prepar-
ation for the figure.. ,
"Many people think. with 'fear of,
organized labor and consider.it to be
destructive, In any community the'
extent to which people can maintain'a -
high level of security is, in its con-
tribution to -all people. An examin•
,ation of the records of organized lalaer
would reveal that it was responsible
for such social welfare as old -age
pensions, • 'withers' - allowances,- free
education and unempleyment insur-
In the last feW years, said the
speaker, labor has won legiglative en-
actments which have opened valuable
relationships. A worker inay now join
-a union with the same -freedbm as in
joining'a church:or other organization,
without fear of discrimination.
"VVitethe development and" applica-
tion of atomic energy, we are faced
with greater problems; Trnd scientists
• are fearful that it may destroy civiliz-
ation, rather than/aenefit it.
"We have •the possibility of a pro-
.duetion never before dreamed of, and
it is with this in mind that we are
• seeking fnrther We- are
working ,toward a thirty -hour week,
and a better standard of living. Pro-
ducts of industry are made to be, con-
sumed."
The speaker claimed that too Many
people today are depending upon the
export market,•which is not a' perman-
ent- one, and can only be maintained
with loans. • So labor, he said, 14 faced
with...the task of placing Canada on a
higher plane of stability. All unions
on the NOrth American centinent must
take their place in forming the uation's
finure. Labor is seeking to establish
social legislation which will tend to
. national stlecess. In sthe horse and
buggy alays, people were on their own.
Today, individual wealth should think
in terms Of the •welfare of the.
"The -secret of. the future lies in
working tOgether and seeking to estab-
lish ,an ordered security and society."
Mr. Harvey concluded.
-Mayor D. D. Mooney extended civic
- greetings and C'ongratnlations, and Dr.
R. Hobbs Taykir, ALP:P., also gave a
_brief address.
