° TEE L ACE MEET
AUGUST 14th, 1947
Editor The Sigual-Stas :
Sir,—In your report of the race meet
in
Goderich on civic holiday you say :
"Some 4,000 people enjoyed a race
melt considerably sulrerier to the one
a ,ear ago, when there Was double the
attendance." -
No . dotrbt various reasons may be
offered fog the drop in attendance,
but I know five people who ,did not
attend, the first beak in many years,
because they would nut drive seventy-
five miles. to attend races which they
would be unable -to see unless they
arrived at the track an hour' or two
in advance of the starting time in
order to secure seats to enable them to
see the horses in action. In a letter
to The Signal -Star almost a year ago
the writer predicted a drop in 'atten-
dance, basing the prediction on the
fact that last year thousands who had
travelled long distances to see the
races were disappointed—not with the
races, for these they did not see. be-
cause they could not get seats.
If the- men who are responsible for
the success or failure of these race
meets are satisfied with an attendance
only slightly in excess of present
seating capacity, that is their business ;
but racing fans over a wide area are
Watching with interest to see if im-
proved accommodation will be pro-
vided " at future meets.

Rev. Joseph Muchan, missionary oaa

work to a large coogregution in Knox
church ou Sunday morning.
Mr. iUuchan's termor}, was based on
the text; "Whom shall I send, and
wile will go for us?" .(Isaiah 6:8)
The great need in India, he said, is
Christian workers.'' There are four
hundred million people in India and
for 8Q,000 there is one missionary. He
urgently appealed to young men and
women to enlist as missionaries.
The congregation adjourned after
the service to the lecture hall, where

Spring Floods Are Causing Dam-
age to u ,ter Cottages,

A petition, representing about sixty
summer residents' at Port Albert, ha&
been sent to the Ashfield Township
Council to be presented to Huron
CountY Council, to all ers of
Parliament'. in the Istria and to
authorities at Ottawa protesting al-
leged 'conditions existing at the mouth
of . Nine Mile River.
Mr: Herb. Sage, display manner of
Hudson's, Detroit, who has had a cot-
tage at Port Albert lor twenty years,
heads the summer residents pressing
the _petition.
Mr. Sage claims that when.the R.A.
F. Was stationed nearby, personael
from the air station removed many
stones from the dock crib at the mouth
of the river and alse many of the
timbers. As a result, he states, when
a storm comes, sand and gravel from
the river bank are thrown into the
mouth of the river. This has now
formed a high sandbar right at the
mouth of the river, ahe says, which
prevents navigation from the lake into
the river. In addition, he claims, the
spring -floods of the river do not norm-
ally flow ont'into the lake but are
backed up at the river mouth, causing
a flood on surrounding land and con-
sequent damage to the cottages located
on this ground.
• MT. Sage feels that it is to the in-
terest of the entire countryside that
necessary work be done at Port Albert
te rectify the aforementioned condi-
tions.
Mrs. Frank Newton of Maria street,
Sarnia, visited Goderich last' week to
spend a few days with her son, Fred
