Lovely Bayfield in which the progressive newly -
formed BaFfield Lions Club is staging its first carnival
on July- 23rd. This carnival will be held in Clan ,Gregor
: (iivare, which is to be seen in above photo at the extreme
left centre. Note location . of present bridge across river.
A new bridge is now in course. of •construction several
hundred yards up the river from the old one.
'Bayfield owes Its origin to a Belgian nobleman..
Baron de Tuyle, whh--purohased land from the Canada
Company in 1828 for three shillings, ninepence per acre.
He purchased 1.500 acres on which to build a town. The
Baron sent an English engineer, Captain Bayfield, to plan
and survey a town.

First honse built at Bayfield was erected in Isu:i niidl
km)ewnn .is Riley's boarding house. Here. the Hien of Baron
de Tuyle lived. First industry was limbering. First
church was Trinity, Anglican church. built in 18-14.5. First
school was liililt on river bank iii 1530. First teacher for
Raytield and Stanley township was Edward Templeton.
Present two-shn•y school building. was built on lots given
by 'the Baron for that purpose. first tr;insirortation was
by water hut in later years carne by stage coach from
Bruceti,eld. A nearly settler, IV. «Wellington Connor.
founded .first Orange lodge there in 18470. which lodge is
today one of the oldest in Canada. - s.
.. Bayfield was incorporated' as a village on January
10, 1870: It was de-inchrporated in 19.20.
With its carnival on July 23rd, the Bayfield Lions Club holds its first event to raise funds for.
community work. The club was formed February 4, 1947, under the sponsorship of the Zurich Lions
Club. On May 14, 1947, the Bayfield Lions Club, with 26 members', received its charter. Today the
Club has some 30 menilbers. •
Following are the officers: president, George Castle; treasurer, Jack Howard ; secretary, Rev. Mr.
L. Morgan; 1st vice-president, Lloyd Scotchmer; 2nd vice-president, Maynard Corrie; 3rd vice-pres-
ident, Elgin Porter; directors, E. Hovey; G. Little, C. Geminhard, M. Davidson: - -
Already. the--effe.ct of_ the club's organization has-been felt in Bayfield. Taking a lease on the.
Agricultural Park, the, club- is having the grounds gone • over and -excellent softball diamonds are
being made. The club has other plans for community work in .Bayfield which 'will be a distinct assist
to the village. To catty out this work considerable money is necessary. For this reason,. the Bay-
field Lions Club is looking for full support from the district in putting over the forthcoming carnival
which wflI be the club's. first entertainment venture.
