SHOULD SALTFORD CHANGE
ITS NAME TO - "TIME"?
Editor The Signal -Star.
Sir,—During the past .week we have
seen the end of two old landmarks, the
village blacksmith shop and the old
chimney at MacEwan's saltwells. Every-
thing An Saltford seems to have its day,
from brickyards, tanneries, salt wells,.
cooper shops, to hotels, brewery, saw-
mills. Time, has taken them all and
left. us with a memory. The name
"Time" would tit the ghosts of yester-
day.

EXAMINATIONS OF
ST. JQSEPH'S MUSIC PUPILS
Flight Lieui. •Turn Cooke, 1),I''.t>',, bun
of Mn and Mrs. C. V. Cooke, formerly
of Guth -rich, who made a distinguished
war record, has been earning further
laurels in, the Pro+`inc.al air service,
having recently brought out ,,from a
burning forest area 'three Cochrane
youths who had bemu left in the bush
a hundred miles north of Cochrane.
The three youths had been jettisoned
,when (. voke .had to bring out another
,party of three rangers who were nearly
surrounded by fire. The youths were
landed, on "an unnamed lake which,
Cooke found when tie was taxiing to
'shore, was . only • about four feet
deep ,and bestrewn with boulders.
Returning to the spot, Cooke piloted
his big Norseman aircraft over the
area -and spotted the boys on a point, can yet converse in the Gaelic have
where they had a lire burning to 'try
to "smudge" mosquitos away. He
landed "between 'rocks," unable to• see
into the brown water", and taxied slow-
ly to shore.
The ' bogs' piled their equipment
aboard the aircraft, but Cooke ran
aground when he started to taxi away,
and they had to jump overboard with
all their clothes on to ease the machine
off the bottom of the lake.
Two rocks were visible above the
water and Cooke steered a course
between them for his takeoff. . With
everyone 'in the machine sitting tense
he pushed—the 'tlirultle•Turward 'and"
headed ,down the lake at ninety miles
an hour for nearly a mile before the big
machine lifted its floats off.
"I wouldn't land, there again on a
bet," said the veteran: of five years
athd eight months of R.C.A. F. service
during which he piloted Canso flying
boats on coastal patrol. "I 'chose the
lake to set the boys down on yesterday,
because it was so large that one
couldn't believe it would be so shallow
or full of rocks. But having landed
I promised I would come back and pick
them up."
