A prominent English author is look-
ing us over. At first, he said, on the
radio, he was hesitant and feared that
the actions of our serving people -would
be -crude and disturbing. Much to his
surprise, he found the service to be
excellent at his Fifth avenue 'hotel.
There was no toadying by' the serving
class, no "yes sir," or "no'- sir," but
such a 'delightful comradeship and a
genuine desire to serve and help that
he was jolly- well disconcerted at first,
but actually got to like the American
brand of democracy, believes in it1 and
was turned about face in respect to the
United States -and its doings. Can it
bee-sno, it q#tnnot be ---haat the enjoy
ment of. caste is lessening in the "tight
little isle?" Speaking of the attitude
of serving men, I recall the pale self-
effacing waiter who attended to Me in
an Oxford hotel. I artlessly inquired,
"What's good?" The waiter nearly
jumped fn thesair from shock. "Good?
Good;t" he groaned, as if the integrity
o'rs' t1YC' realm were questioned --"Why,
sir, it's all good, sir."
Valor in Brooklyn : A burglar climbed
into the home of Dr. Magary, pastor
of the Lafayette avenue Presbyterian
church, threatened Mrs. Magary,. who
screamed loudly. Dr. Magary jumped
on the burglar, .who dived through a
window and fraetured a leg in the leap.
The pastor caught up .With him on the
street, and sat on him, threatened him
with a poised golf club, until police
came. Good work.. -
