This is evident from a 1fivo-year 'experi- meat which was concluded at the Central Experimental Vaunt Ot- tawa, in which barley seeded on June 1 yielded 34.2 'bushels per acre; on June 15f 29.5 bushels per acre, and on Jply 1, 22.7 bushels per acre. Alaska oats seeded on June 1st yielded 45.2 bushels per • acre; on June 15, 35.7 bushels, and on . July 1, 14.6 bushels. Using this as a guide, Mr. Mac- Leod makes the .following recom- mendations: 1. That barley be sown either alone or in a mixture with early oats and 'buckwheat as soon as possible and up to July 1. 2. That early oats be not sown alone after the middle of June. ' 3. That consideration be given 'to seeding the following seed mix- tures as early as possible in June and up to July 1; (a) Alai3ka or Cartier oats, 50 pounds; O.A.C. No. 2i barley, 50 pounds, .a total of 100 pounds per acre... (b) Ajax oats, 59 pounds; Barboff or Galore bar- ley, 50 pounds,a - total rate. Of seeding of 100 . pounds per acre. (c) Barley, one bushel; buckwheat, three to four pecks per acre. In addition to the above mix- tures early maturing varieties of • hybrid corn, barley, soy beans, grain millets and buckwheat •niay still be sownit .,. ,.. Moisture, warmth and pl` iit•efaodµ are the essentials for strong, rapid ' plant growth. There is an abund- ance of moisture and warm weather can now be expected. Plant food in the form of commercial fertil? izers as required will bring -crops in rapidly. Some of it. has been treated and therefore cannot be used,, as Pfeed, and it is suggested that this seed be sown and a chance taken. Farmers. have little to lose by doing so, as the crop may be cut for hay or pastured, and a fair crop of grain be harvested.
