Improvements to Include Filter
Plant, Nett Water -tower,

The go-ahead signal has been given
for the enlargement and improvement
of the .town's water system, with a
filtering system, a new 12 -in. main
traversing the town, a:hd a new steel
water -tower, which if permission 'be .
granted by the Town CQuneil, ,will be
erected' in the. northeast corner of
Harbor, Park.
This decision was reached at a meet-
ing- -ef the Public Utilities Commission
on Tuesday evening, with all members
present, and E. H. Darling of Hamilton,
the Commi'ssion's engineer, was given
authority to proceed with -the work.
'The new 12 -in. main will: run f.om
the top .of Harboa Hill to Picton street
and thence to the east end of • the
town and will prOvirde additional pres-
sure for ail that Part of the town.
The proposed flew water tOwer, or
standpipe, will be 125 feet in height and
will thus afford pressure for large
portion of the; town. , The present
standpipe at Albert kltreet will be
retained and is said tci be good for
many -years yet.
The entire program will cost, it is
estimated, $190,000 or more.
Credit Note $10,844
At this Meeting the Commission re-'
ceived from the Ontario Hydro -Electric
Power Commission a credit note of
$10,844.64 .fpr the . year ended October
31st, 1946. This is the largest credit
ever received by -'the focal (commission.
It. represents the difference between the
twelve m'd>iithly power bilis paid' by the-
Commission, totalling -$63,894.46, and
• the actual' cost of power for the same
period ae calculated by the Ontario
Commission, $53,049.82.
The salaries of the 'P.U.C. staff, in-
cluding thirteen employees, were ad-
justed ads from April 22, 1947. •
The account of the Provincial H.E.
P.C. Or power supplied the town in
Marchi \vas $5,396.90.

The Industrial Softball League gets
under -way on Tuesday, May 20, at 7
p.m., when the.Purity Flour team takes
on the Legion, The second game will

cleaner town.

X-RAY CLINIC.
OPENS SATURDAY
More than 95 per cent: of the citizens
of Goderich who have been invited to
attend the tuberculosis detection mass
X-ray clinic et MacKay Hall from May
17 to 22 have expressed their willing-
ness to attend. The, committee has
expressed pleasure with the splendid
response.' Some citizens who were in-
adver• tently overlooked have sought an
appointment, and telepfloile calls have
been coining in from country residents
seeking an appointment. These latter
have been advised there are no bound-
aries and ,all are welcome on any day,
but preferably on May 22.
The clinic opens at 10 a.m. Saturday,
when the first twenty-five appointments
will be handled. It is hoPed to K -r11.37

hundred an hour:

Owing to the illness of thh president,
Mrs. `Wilmot presided an conducted

sented a beautiful gavel, the gift of
Miss Mary Howell to the Association,
Mrs. P. Hill receiving the gift, "
Mrs. D. D. Mooney spoke, on ,behalf
of the Goderich community recreation
centre. A motion; was passed in sup-
port of this project, but as this was
the closing meeting of the year further
steps will have to be left with the
new executive. - e. •
Another - $50 was voted for six
months' support of 'the two adopted
F,.ui pear_ ehiidren. A letter of thanks
was read from the French girl for 'a
box she had received; a pretty Easter
card was enclosed.
' In reporting the high lights of the
Easter convention,-. Mrs. . C. Baxter an-
nounced that$11,529.30 had been given
to the Save the ,Children Fund by the,
IL.. -& K. Associations in Ontario last
year.
A picnic for tlllk children will be
sponsored again this year, on June 20.
An invitation was extended • to the
kindergilrten to be present on .this oc-
casion and -Miss Hume graciously ac-
cepted.

HELD AT ST. PETER'S
A service of continuous prayer from
midnight Monday to midnight Tuesday
was conducted by _Father H. T. Fallon
at. St. Peter's chinch., this week:
Prayers implored God's help in bringing
a just -peace to a troubled world.
These prayerreervices are being held
by two different parienes each day in
the Roman Catholic piocese of Loudon
during the period from Maty 1 •to June
15. For twenty-four hours en Tuesday
of this week the two parishes conduct-
ing the services were Goderich and
French Settlement.

Mother's Day was observed on Sun-
day in many of the local churches
and gratitude for the great gift of
mother love was expressed in sermon,:
story and song.
Rev. Richard Stewart at Knox Pres.-
byterian church took as the subject of
his morning address "God's Great
Gift." "This day," he aro. "should
be one of gratitude for all the love
and sacri ice put forth by mothers."
Spiritual values 'should have their
place in the home, and Christian .mo-
thers should- have tlxp love of truth,
goodness and beauty.
Appropriate music was a feature of
the service and included a chorus,
"Praise to the Mothers of the World,"
by the C.GII.T. choir, and the anthem
by the choir, '`O Blessed Day' .of
Motherhood." '
The rite bf. baptism was administered
by Mr. Stewart to Mary Gail, daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. William K. Thom-
son of Kingston: •

BRITISH RELIEF FUND
A clothing drive, sponsored by the
employee -management committee of the
Dominion Road Machinery Company
in aid of the British flood relief cam=
paign, has been an outstanding success,
reports J. -G. Macdonald, chairman of
the sub-colrinlit.tee set in) to c'arlvass
every employee of the Company. In
addition to large quantities of clothing,
$248 in cash was raised. 'The Kinsmen
Club of Goderich is arranging sorting,
packing, wind transportation of cloth-
ing to the campaign headquarters.

route with cargoes for the elevator.
The tug A. M. Macaulay, which was
in harbor' lases week for several days,
left on Friday for Meaford. where she
will die engaged in dredge dutyf
The tug Sulphite cleared on Friday
with the barge Swederope, last of the
three barges -that wintered here and
will -engage in the pulpwood trade for
the summer.
The tanker Imperial King• ston was in
harbor on Sunday with a cargo of
-gasoline for, the Imperial Oil Co.
Last night (Wednesday) those at the
lakefront could see quite clearly the
lights of.. Michigan harbors, across the
lake, at Harbor Beach, Point aux
Barques and Sauilae, and could count
half -a -dozen or more vessels on the
other side of the lake. The phen-
omenon created much interest among
those who happened to be at the water
front.
Bert MacDonald is receiving so many
inquiries as- to the perch run that
he asks The Signal -Star to state that
the perch are not running yet to any
extent, probably becauee the water
along the shore has not yet .cleared up
after the spring storms.,

'Strengthening the home." Ile pointed
out that the Church has always em-
phasized the importance of the home
as the foundation of society and that
many of the evils of our present day
have their origin, in Carelessness and in-
difference regarding the •r-esponsibilitfes
of the home. In the last analysis, he
said, the respi)nsibilit.y of creating a
fine home life rests upon the mother
and father, and he pointed out how
they may create 1111 atmosphere in,
which there is a spirit of loyalty and
geed fellowship and in ,which the moral
and spiritual principles of life may
,unconsciously be learned by t.lie elhild-
retl. The building of a better world
for the future is dependent, he said,
upon the creation, of a home environ-
ment hi which children will cultivate a

Perhaps because there have been
so many act vities lately to engage
the attention ` of • the townspeople,
the donations in Goderich for -
British relief have riot been as
numerous as might have been ex-
pected of a people so generous as
our people usually aro. It is hoped
that in every household there will
be a diligent search for anygar-
ments that can bo--aparedl for the
flood -stricken people of Britain,
and that donations of food and cash
• also will come forward to augment
those' already received.
For this reason the time limit for
the cainpaign hal been e`.atended,
and any gifts of clothinig, food or
cash will be gladly received at
the Town Hall.

eight years of hardship, wreck and

Plans are rapidly being completed by
the Goderich community recreational
committee for the ,launching of a ce, lie
paign, opening Monday, May 26th, to
raise funds for the erection of a new
arena in Goderich.
It is hoped to put oxt a gala day in
Godernel on Zflay :loth to publieig,e the .
start of the appeal for funds on May,
26th. The definite program has not
yet been decided. •
Phil Carey got in touch with Ralph
McCreath of Toronto, well-known Can-°
adieu figure skating champion, for the
purpose of inviting.Barbara'Ann Scett,

rich's gala day on May 24th.
Today B. H. McCreath wired that
Ralph had arranged -with Miss Scott
and Syl Apps to be in Goderich on May
28th, apparently being unable to ,come
May 24th. The remainder- of the' tele-
gram read: "However, President .Nor-
man Gregory of Figure Skating As-
sociation has forbidden her appearance
on penalty of expulsion. Ralph is a
member of executive and has protested
the ruling, asking for meeting of As-
sociation to clarify position. Will ad-
vise you of progress." .

will be a keynote in the campaign.
A poster contest is to be held which
will be ()pen to pupils in. every school in
Goderich and district. Details have
already been snaffled to the schools.
