meeting 'was over they had formed a'
lne(\' organization and laid. - til=e found-
ation for the great rural women's move-
ment which now practically encircles
the globe. 1t is significant that the
primary purpose of the first Women's
lostitute was u,pt to raise money, but
rather to provide a smeditun through
which rural women could nal.e't at
regular intervals to discuss their prob-
leuls,and to become informed regarding
their duties and responsibilities as
homemakers and citizens.
The credit for inspiring formation of
the first Women's Institute goes to Mrs.
Adelaide IIoodless of Hamilton. A
short time before,' lloodless, on
the invitation of Erlaud Lee of Stoney
Creels, waS asked to speak at au even-
ing meeting of the Farmers' Institute.
She spoke on the value and need of
teaching domestic science and sewing
in the public schools, and finding that
tIt( \\'0111(111 were- interested she sug-
gested that an Institute for Women
be formed, similar 'to the Farmers'
Institute. Her suggestion was
mediately taken illi by the women of
the district, and a meeting was ar-
ranged for February 19, 1897, in
Squires' Ilallf Stoney Citeek, One
-hundred and one women ;tt_teuded the
meeting, and decided -to organize a
Women's Department of Domestic
Economy in alliliatiun with the
Farmer's Institute.- Thus the mother
