Mr. Everett is elected by a majority

'Victoria, D. C., expressed the setlti-

of Canada when he declared that the
colonies would be quite overcome in a
united parliauteat; it would be impes-

would be required to give up their
policy and the result would be that,
knitted of being producers, these
colonies would become more oateu-

other manufacturing 0013 tree in Bug -
laud. But this is not all; there would
be annually a nice little hill for ue to
pay, for the support of an army end
navy, and in addition we would be
required to help settle disputes in
England which in no way interests
or benefits this colony, and in this
connection we would have to con-
tribute largely to defray ezpeusee,
not to mention anything about the
soldiers we would have to supply, and
the annuities we would have to pay
such soldiers. In our opiuton the
few individuals who have been dream-

have long to wait for its fulfilmeut, as
far as the Dominion of Canada is
concerned, for the people are perfectly
satisfied to let well enough alone.
tWO CONSERVATIVE 'VIC-
TORIES.
The result of the Antigoniah oleo•
on Friday is a decisive and signifi—
cant victory for the governmeut and a
warning to the Opposition. This
county has been considered a 'are
Reform conatitnonoy. At the general
election in 1882 the Reform candi—
date, Mr. Malmo, was returned by it
majority of 883, but on Friday this
adverse majority wee entirely wiped
Out and majority of 200 given in favor

Undeniable approval of the way the
Goternmetlt haVe bon and are con-

end other Deform journals, attribute
the defeat to bribery, corruption and
treachery, supposing that by thio
twaddle the effect of the rout
will be in part destroyed. It would
be more praiseworthy if these journ—
als ,vould attribute the defeat to the
proper cause, namely, the wanrof a
policy by the Reform leaders that is
acceptable to their followers, and not
thus insult the rank and fyle of the
party by publishing throughout the
civilized world that the Reform party
will barter of their franchise the same
as they would sell any marketable'
commodity, to the highest bidder.
Another even more decisive victory
for Sir John A. i1acdouald and his
Government was scored by the elec-
tion cf Mr. Everett for St. Johne, N.
B., on Tuesday. In 1883 Hon. Isaac
Burpee, Reform candidate, was elect-
ed by a majority of 534, but such a
reaction bas since taken place that
the Government candidate, Mr. Ev-
erett, has been elected by a majority
of about 400 votes. This means the
reversal of nine hundred votes and is
a guarantee that the Conservative pol-
icy is pleasing to the people.

question further ventilated and thor-

friends. The communications from
both therm gentlemen were well writ-
ten, brim full of excellent suggestions,
and have, no doubt, been thoroughly
aousidered by many of our readers.
We would be pleased to bear the opi-
uiane of a few more on the subject,
and particularly that of a gontlemau
in Usborue, who has on former coca -
gone expressed his thoughts through
the public prep on other important
gnestione. The suggestions offered
by the persona referred to are sound,
and we venture to say,, will go far in
ooaviuoing the farming fraternity
that it would be to their advantage to
organize such an association as they
advocate. Our columns are open to
those who wish to express their ideas
on this important matter. Let us
bear from you whether you agree with
us or not.
A FEW weeks ago we felt it expedi-

tnight, however, state that the drum-
beating has not been so lon.i during

given to requests from aunoyed per;

Exeter for over a year, ahtl• if they
have accomplished any good in that
time, surely they do not attribute it to
the beating of drums on the L /rd's
day or any other day : Why, then
do they cling so tenaciously to a
practice which ,briur a about no good,
but, we believe, split testing, when the
majority of, if net all. right-thinking
people are opposed to it and deem it
an annoyance and it nuisance. What
do they expect to gain by 9tie h ob.
etinaoy ? They certainly will not
win the sympathy of the people, nor
do they merit it. When the law
under which the Salvationists claim
that they have, the right to beat
their drum, and march upon the pub-
lic street., was enacted,it was intend-
ed that they should exercise their
power judiciously. This privilege was
not granted them for the purpose of
