When our naition was young and the
population smaller we could stand a
degree of waste. But now the situ-

of watersheds, control of ,floods and
the return to gr=assland of vast

Districts and enlightened farming we
are starting a revolution on the land.
It's a revolution that deserves the sup-
port_of all, because it affects the welfare
of the whole social order.

THOSE WEDDING REPORTS
(Swift Current, Sask., Sun)
There's no,. getting away from the
feet . that a lot of people have been
getting married in the past five or six
years. As a matter of fact, people
have been getting married for nigh on
many thousands of years, but from the
standppint of newspapers•it feels lately
as if everyone in the world is •getting
married. The Sun.'s' eoJpmns have been.
chuekfull .of weddings, most of them
sounding pretty much • the same, with
dress descriptions and all the rest of
the folderol. Our linoty a operators
lave been going near daffy on "crepe

oyed with the idea of conserving
eeded space by putting a stopper on
ress descriptions, etc., until last week
when -we read. an editorial' on the
ubject in the distinguished Saturday
venting Post. It related how a Tin-
ted States weekly newspaper editor
ad a similar idea '(and did it) but
efore many weeks had passed public -
y' apologized in his paper and went
ack to the old routine.
It seems .that women never get tired
f reading about what the brides wear
any old bride, so long as she wears
othes. So, we hasten to disillusion
urselves about wedding dresses and
oing-away ensembles not being news.

SMALL -WORD. LANGUAGE
Examination of the fundamentals of
e English language reveals that it is
small -word means of communication.
can therefore be understood why it
proposed to make English a world-
de language to take the place of
at Esperanto would have been•had
been fostered a eotiple of decades
o. There lire still' those, however.
o believe that Esperanto should be
d as a worldwide tongue because of
simple construction, no exceptions
any grammatical rule and the fact
t it Is composed `of words and
ases from many languages.
ut today English is widely used in'
eign lands; to .such an extent it
Lias replaced French. This growth' in
popularity is welcomed; but it is no
reason why we, should start using big
words in order to make an impression.
It is. more effective to use small words.
For instance: "With the consum-
mation of the holocaust, the unparal-
leled quality of tobacco found only on
the bench lands- of Omar IKhayyam's
romantic country is now here." How
much easier to say: "Now the war is
over we can get that good Persian
tobacco again."
Certainly there are words like "con-
summation," but when you're through.

all you've 'said is "end." Why not - -
start there? The universe, 'Vola
Irons has pointed out, is known
little words -land, sea, air, sky, clo
rain, sun, moon, star. wind, 'heat, co
snow and so on.
Further study shows our bodies a
understood by little words -arm, 1
head; ear, lip, toe, heart, vein, liver,
hand, neck, hair. Coxiands are
short words, too -go, coxae, stop, halt,
march, gee, haw, run, walk, turn.
Calors , . are :.ma ittYe word red

mauve, tan, green.
- And emotions can be- squeezed into
short words. The greatest emotias
in the world are love and hate. The
most you can say is, "r love you," or,
"I hate you." In the Bible you have
the basis of all Christian* in one
verse " of 11ttie _ words : `&For'ritiie bii _
o1 Malle
r,sco ato• seek $rteZ'to save that
which was lost." Look it up in ^St.
Luke, chapter 19, verse 10.
There is no end of examples of the
use -of little words.' Take directions -7 -
up,
down, north, south, east, west.
The trick in writing Letters, for instance,
is not the use of 16 -cylinder words;
it's putting little ones together in new
ways.
There's another angle of the English
tongue that will cause some thought.
Study the dictionary for combined
words. The word jounce is a combin-
ation of jolt and bounce, ind it is
exactly true. Prance is proud and -
dance. Then there are shortened
words like bus, van, wig, fag, prim --
from omnibus, caravan,
fatigue. primitive, periwig,
So there ,is a vast store of little
words that move the world. The
thing is to toss them around and make
them do new tricks. We do not say,
that you should shun big words' alto
gether. Use a whopping lalapa1oser
now and then, but don't get into. the
habit of leaning on them. -=London
