Presentation to Newlyweds. -A re- ception -was held in the parish hall on Tuesday evening to give honor to, the newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. Ignatius Martin. A large gathering danced to the Carruthers' orchestra, and during the evening the guests of honor were called to the stage while Re*. Father Donnellan _.expressed. the good ,wishes of the community. The couple were presented - with a purse of money by Michael O'Neill and Bert Martin. The groom for himself and on behalf of his bride thanked the donors in an able Mit of money from one pocket to another. I thought subsidies came out of Gov- ernment funds obtained firom - the people: Therefore I cannot understand his --statement. Can you explain? A. -It is true that subsidies come from Government funds collected from the people. However, they do not mean .t ---.transfers, of money, from "one pocket to another." Let me explain it like this. - Supposing a farmer is selling a food item fpr which he must obtain ' if- he caystaDry on its pro- duction. Under our present trade system -.thls article would _ordinarily pass through wholesale and, retail levels before it reached the cesumer. Suppose the wholesaler and retailer .take a 10 per cent. markup. The Wholesaler would charge the retailer $1.10 and the retailer charges the. consumer $1.21. Now, if a subsidy of 10 cents . were .paid the farmer, would obtain the dollar „required but he would sell to the .- wholesaler at 90 en's; senger•-•slop :..she ,p4s,t season, Mr, inarr`uro'f '" lf-Tdr cent: would•..charg .. Without the IIe added that many letters had been 10 per cent. subsidy - the -consuiner would pay $1.21 and with the subsidy he pays $1.09, or two cents less than the producer subsidy. , _ 0ACi %OBE' ; "Black & White"..Men at Annual Banquet Awards 'nese i.ted. to W. 11.
