• ARTHUR JBATES
Arthur J. Bates, native of Goderich,
died on Thursday last in Toronto at the
--no of sixty-eight years:, '` He was the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bates of
this town and as a young man moved
to Stratford and later to Toronto,
i 'where he was engaged in_.the brokerage

him only a few months and he leaves
three sons, Raymond, Sidney and Jolie ;
also one sister, Mrs. Arthur Davis
(Olive), of Toronto. Mr. Bates was
a Mason and an adherent of Erskine
United church, Toronto.

The death -occurred at Kitchener on
Friday evening last,. after a long its
uess, •of Mrs. Carrie Roberts, widow of
the late Leonard Roberts, at the age
of sixty -sib, years. , Mrs. Roberts was
born at—Bayfield, a daughter of the
late. Mr. and Mrs. .Daniel' 111acDbnnld,
.and had resided in Kitchener for forty-
six years. 'Her husband predeceased
her in 1941 and surviving' are one son,
Geldwyn ,(Pat)' Roberts, of Kitchener,
and • two daughters, Mrs. Carp Berlett;
of New Hamburg, and Mrs. Harold G.
Martin, of Kitchener ; also one brother
and four sisters, George MacDonald,
Victory, Wise. ; Mrs. Gordon' MacDon-
ald, Goderich ; Mrs: Norman MacKay,
formerly 'Uf Goderich but now of St.
Marys ; Mrs. Mervin McQuarrie, . Tor-
onto, and Mrs. resIie Strong, Blooming-
dale..
Mr. Gordon MacDonald 'and the
Misses Enid and' Una. MacDonald, of
toot°n, were at Kitchener for the fun-
eral on Monday. ,..Mrs: Norman 'Mac-
Kay and Mr. and Mrs. Bert .Middleton,
of St., Marys. , also attended. The
burial. was in Woodland cemetery,

Sixty -three -,year-old, Norwegian-bOrn
E. Solberg is captain of the vessel
George F. Rand, of Bui1alo, which un-
leaded about 10,090, tons of coal at
the harbor 'for the Goderich Salt
Company today. The Rand is one of
the largest vessels ever to enter -Uode-
rich harbor.
Capt. Sailberg told The 'Signal -Star
this was his third visit to Goderich..
The summer of 1929 was the occasion
of his first visit, when .he came to get
a • load of grain froth the Goderich
elevator to take to Buffalo. His second
visit was in 1941, when he brought in
a load of coal for the Goderich Salt
Company.
As a young lad in Norway he liked
the, sea • and began his seafarin career
at the age of tifteeu. Since that time
he has made many - trills to British,'
Germdu, French, Spanish, Russian and
other ports.
In 1903 he sailed for, the United Fruit
Company of New York City in the
West Indies trade. In 1905 he came
to sail on the -Great Lakes and has been
on the . 1a,1ses , ever since — forty-one
years. q . ,
"In two more -years I shall have com-
pleted fifty- years of sailing and I plan
to retire then," smiled the -genial, big
Norwegian captain as he sat in the
comfortable cabin of the George F.
Rand
He recalled that two or three sailing
friends of his were amongst those
drowned in Lake Huron in the big
storm of 1913 and whose bodies were
washed up on Lake Huron s"1it31is not
far from, Goderich.

COUNTERFEIT BILLS
Counterfeit $5 bills that have been
passing around in other parts of On-
tario are so far scarce in Goderich.
To date, according to police, only two
or three have been reported, o'ne of
these being taken in at a stare . and
another at a bank,. The bogus bills
are distinguished from the genuine by
a , black mark at the outside of the
:King's left eye. and the figures on-the-
i'counterfeit bills are slightly out of
alignment.
HURON MEN AT SHORTHORN
SALE
Several Huron men were buyers at
the gale of Shorthorn cattle' at the
McFarlane stock farm at Ailsa Craig
last week. Top price` for a bull, $425,

two heifers, one at $500 and another at
$310. Other buyers from Huron were
James W. Smith, Brussels, and C. H.
