rationed by the Board, but the short-
age is temporary and improvements are
expected . shortly. Merchants ,may
adopt any plan they wish in distribut-
ing these commodities to their .cus-
tomers. We have no regulations re-
quiriug them to sell at certain hours or
to limit their .sales. They may do this
of their own accord. We have dis-
covered that many merchants have
their own rationing plans and - put
` these goods. on sale at different hours
of the' day to best accommodate all the
prospective. buyers.
• Q: I saw large cans of unsweetened
peaches in a store the other. day and
they' were not rationed. Why is this
when smaller cans are rationed?
A. --These peaches in 105 -ounce tins
-were packed by canners largely for
the use of restaurants or public eating
places. When the= -supply' is greater
than the demand some are sold to re-
tail outlets. However, they require so
much sugar that few households 'can
use them efficiently. The small cans
are rationed to protect diabetics who
cannot have sweetened foods.
Q.—I paid' 23nee is a pound for
shortening. Is this price too 'high?
A.—The price does seem high. How-
ever, if you, will give us the brind of,
shortening and• the name of the dealer
we will check. the eefling-price is the
highest- -price' asked during the basic
period.
