Miss 'Ann ;Wurtele, -educational secre-
tary, announced that the top iii of the
essay contest for grade VIII'in the
town secondary schools would be
,"Pets," a follow-up of the successful
pet -parade. Miss. Wurtele pointed out
that the topic had already created con-
siderable interest and there was every
evidence of a number of promising
entries. •
As at the National Chapter year-
end the affiliation of. the Order with
the Canadian Girl Guides and the Navy
League willterminate, so that the
Chapetr will no longer be able to spon-
sor the local Girl Guide troop, the
regent regretted that this very pleas-
ant association must be severed, and
expressed herbestwishes on behalf
of the Chapter for the continued suc-
cess of the treop in their --splendid
work, and at the pleasure of the meet-
ing the stuir.,of $25 was voted to the
Guides, which gift was appreciatively
acknowledged by Miss: Wilkes on be-

After residence of a few years 'in
Stratford ainee his retirement from
medical practice in Goderich, Dr. A1-1
fred Hope Macklin died on Sunday in
Victoria Hospital, London, where he
had beep a' patient for three weeks.
He Was in -his • seventy-seventh. year.
During his residence of thirty-five
years in Goderieh took a keen inter-
est in the affairs if the town and was
twice honored by election to the mayor-
alty, 1908-09.
Dr. Macklin came • to Goderich in
1905 frow Mildmay, where he had tirst
practised after his graduation from the
University .of Toronto in 1890. Before
yeller, gave an interesting talk on
"Canada Must Chovse.” The speaker,
basing her arguments ,144,1 present-day
logic, set forth the re,

Thanksgiving and Rally Day ser-
vices were held ifi North street United
ehurch on Sunday last. with good con-
gregations attending both morning and
evening. All departments of •the Sun-
day school were present at the morn-
ing service and occupied the central
part of the church,. Mr. H, S, Turner,
the superintendent. read the, morning
lesson and presented a copy of the
Bible to each of the boys and girls
graduating' from the prinutry depart: -
Went. Appropriate Thanksgiving music
was rendered by the choir and Mein
hers of the Sunday sehool. "Father,
We Thank Thee,"‘ was: sung as quar-
tette by Jane Graham, Helen.Prldham,
Ruth Westbrook and Judith Turnbull.
The offertory took the form of a lovely
violin solo ,,by Eleanor Driver, accom-
panied by her sister Cora at the 'piano.
A sextette, "Thanks Be to ,God," Was
given by Misses Barbara and Margaret
Henry, Patricia Church, Mrs. Joe
Morgan, Mrs, Fred Williams and Mrs.
Francis Overholt. The anthe,m by the
rhoir was entitled "While the Earth
Remaineth." The minister, Rev. R.
- Turnbull, spoke brieily to the
children.
