Cater for Banquet
Problems in connection with the
International Plowing Match to be held
at Port Albert in October were dis-
cussed at an executive meeting. of f the
Huron county ,pleiving. , match com-
mittee held at the -office of the Herron
county agrieul,tural representative at
Clint(n on Mondaynight. About
forty
were in attendance. , The, meeting was,
presided over by Hugh Hill; chairman
of the committed.
,Plans were discussed regarding the
presence at the match of the Governor-
General. He is s heduled .to arrive in
Goderich on the t.N.R. noon train on
Wednesday, October 16.
It was stated that arrangements are
being made for the =parking of as many
as 10,000 ears for the larger days of,
the match. On Friday night, , October 18, a
banquet for about 1,000 people is to
be held. It was announced that L. R.
.Weston, of Goderieh, is the caterer for
this banquet. Chairman Hill ex-
pressed confidence in the ability of Mr.
Weston to provide au excellent
banquet.
• T. Cruickshank, of Wingham,
chairman of the publicity committee,
said he would appreciate it if the
chliirmen of the various .committees
showed more co-operation in the way
of informing him of what these com-
mittees were doing in order that more.
publicity might be' given.
Atom interest has been shown in
actions..and wholesale prices'. are the
ceiling.-- .HOWever, we would. remi-nd
you --that under -.present Provincial laws
permission must' be obtained to hold
turkey -raffles. The Wartime Prices
and Trade Board has no jurisdiction
over these raffles and does not issue
permits. You should consult • your
local police.
Q Has the • former ruling—that an
owner of a house could give a six
months' iiotice- • to a tenant to vacate
if the owner wishes to live in the house
again come.into force. We have heard
several times it has, but have not
seen a'ny story in the newspapers.
A.—There seems to be considerable'
confusion 'regarding this .rgplation.
An owner may`not give a well-behaved
tenant six ihionths' notice to vacate if
the owner wishes to secure possession
for himself. •
Q.—Why is jam.rationeci When sugar
is so scarce?
A.—Jam is rationed because it is in
short supply. This short supply is
due in part to the shortage_ of sugar
required in 'the manufacture of jam.

IS THE ANXIOUS QUERY
The ,current acut(;sshortage of nails
is praying a stumbling block even to
the International Victory Plowing
Match. '
Elmer Graham, - of Port ,Albert, .in
charge of the teams committee ,of the
Huron county plowing match com-
mittee, 'told 'of his trials and tribul-,
ations 'in this respect at the- executive
meeting held at Clinton-, on Monday
night. He thought he would .he able
to gret the .lumber for the, erection. of
stalls to take care of about .one han-
d e ea
dred teams of horses at the 'Interna=
tional match, but the securing of nails
was a different story. "How can we
ever erect these stalls., without. any
nails?" he asked. He said he needed
three- and four -inch nails and other
lengths also.
At Lucknow recently he went into
a store where he was allowed to pur- I
chase only twenty-five cenxs' worth of.
nails. When he informed the store-
keeper that he needed the nails for the
International flowing Match, the
storekeeper replied, "I don't care if
you are -the King of England; we sell'
only 'twenty-five cents' worth of nails
to,each customer. and that is all."
So contact is to be Made With all
the 1 'nfiuentiai circles in the Province,
so that a mere two or three kegs of
nails may be securedto erect 'stalls

Special Meeting of
Town Council
A ?special meeting of the Town Conn-
ell was held oueIF'riday evening to deal
with some matters left` over from
previous regular meetings. '
At a meeting of the special com-
mittee with representatives of service
''organizations - of -the town, held - on
August 20th, a resolution was. passed
recommending that Thanksgiving Day'
be desi; hated as a "clay for the repogni-
tion of Ate services of those residents
of the town vtrbo ,enlisted in the armed
forges, and• that a suitable memento
of their service be presented to them
at a public meeting, the cost to •. be,
borne by the Town at an amount not -to
.exceed $5,000.
,This resolution' was Considered on
Friday evening, but the Council found
itself unable to comply with the recom-
mendation in its entirety. Under the
Municipal Act the Couri 1l gannot vote
a sum of more than X500 for such a
purpose, and as there ar-e about 500
service men and women to be taken
into account, this sum would be inade-
quate. It was decided to drop the
suggestion of a gift, but to make ar-
rangements for , a dinner and dance
for the veterans to be held •at 'some
date before the. end of the year, all
plowing by tractors than by horses
in the coaching classes held so far in
the tlistrict, Gordon McGavin stated:
, The Accommodation Problem _
Dr. Gilbert 1;'rarie, chairman of the

he had been assured of accommodation

the other hand, there` were those vvh6

but mashy wanted 32 per night..
"I don't- think that charging 3.2 per
night is showing much - hospitality .to
our visitors," was the comment -of one
of the executive co'mhnittee.
.It was. ,huinorously suggested •that
the members of the. billeting committee

to see -which would be worth . 32 aild

A motion was finally passed thatyan
