Fathers Have Busy Evening
The Town Council had a busy even-
ing on Friday last undvgot through a
lot of correspondence and ether busi-
ness: All members - were present ex-
cept Couns. Sanderson, and Taylor. .
Mayor Mooney said he had a request
for a picture of the Court House for
preservation in the archives of. the.
Toronto ArtGalleries and suggested
that' anyone having a- -suitable picture
might donate it for this purpose.
R.. M. Menzies appeared before the'
Council with a request for a liberal
grant to the Board of Trade. He
detailed the more important activities
of the Board which had required ex-
penditure, and stated that the members
of the Board `had contributed the sum
of $958, almost dollar for dollar of the
Town's grant last year of $1,000. The
request was referred to the finance
committee.
Taxes collected_; in July, according
to Collector Sturdy's_ _ report, were
$5(;,620.10. For the first seven months
of the year, to. July 31st, they were
$91,725.04, an increase of $14,230.51
-over collections for the similar period
of 1945.

Petitions for Sidewalks and Curbing
A petition was received for a• new
sidewalk -on the .Square between Ham-
ilton and. Norfir streets, the property -
owners agreeing to pay one-half the
cost upon completion.
Other petitions for sidewalks, 'on the
local improvement plan, were, for 'the
south sidle of Bruce street, between

Goderich Motors asked permission
for erection of a sig'il on Stanley street
and Gardner Motor Sales requested
permission for a sign at the corner
of Elgin ave. and Victoria street. Both
requests were sent to •fhe public works
committee.
For Hospital' Extension
A letter from the board of Alexandra
Hospital confirmed the request made-
by a deputation, at a previous meeting
for_ a loan of $1.2,000 towards the .sost
of a twenty -bed extension. to the west
of 'the present hospital building, As
security the hospital would give the
Town a demand rote for $12,000,,,pay
ments to be made "if and when funds
are available." This was. referred to
the finance committee.,
. Twelve property -owners on •Elgin
avenue between Wellington and Welles-
ley street; protested against the plan
to erect,_ four Wartime houses on a
lot and a -half on the north side of
'Unit' street. Thiti, it wits - contended,
would be undue crowding .,and would
detract from the appearance of the
street. r ,

a complete list of all from Goderich
who enlisted for service in either the

Minister acknowledged receipt of the

Tug-of-war Entry Already Received

The girl who wins the title of Bliss
Huron in the Labor Day beauty con-
test will have her name engraved on
the handsome trophy which will be
awarded to her along with $50 in cash,

mittee, announces.
It is also announced that instead of
the Sea'Cadet band of Sarnia there will
be present the Veterans' Band of
Sarnia, which band ,has won 'numerous
medals in competitions. The band
comes highly recommended- by Flight
Lieut. Freel of Sarnia.
Goderich,.has already placed its entry
in the tug-of-war. Entries are expected
from Ashfield, Colborne and Goderieh

United, church, and the lesson was read

lain of ILM.('.S, "Royal Oak."
"The Y

Christian Faith" was the subject .of
Rev. Mr. Turnbull's sermon, based on
the -text, "Gel forth into all the world,
and envisioning a :world made Christ-
ian with -God as the head. The
preacher pointed out that. Christianity
produces people of ideals and 'vision.
There is a growing tendency today, he
declared, for co-operation hnd friendli-
ness among nil denominations. The
teachings of -Jesus are timeless, morally
and spiritually.
The choir under the direction of Mr.
Moss, of Toronto, ,sang an anthem,
and a duet Wats sung beautifully by
Mrs. W. F. Saunders and her daughter,
Miss Gail Saunders.
After the service the parade of
about c eighty cadet t• proceeded to
the Square, -headed by the bugle band.
The salute for. the march past wits
taken by Lieut. Commander Pierce of

With perfect weather and under a
canopy esf stars, the band tattoo and
fireworks display at Agricultural Park
on We„dnesda' night, sponsored by tlie-
Goderlch Lions Club. was a brilliant ,
success. Soule 3,000 .attended and
thoroughly erajoye the evening's preei
gram. •
Six bands paraded from' the Square
to the park, where the program was
opened with all bands playing te-
gether. The bands were; Milverton
Red Seal Band, Goderich Blue Water
Band, Exeter Band, Clinton Legion
Band, Seaforth Band, Lucknow Pipe
Band. The Sea Cadets from Stratford
and Woodstock, with their- band, also
marched smartly in the parade.
The program was opened with a brief
address from J. W. Coates, Lions
president. First band to play was he
Goderich BIue Water Band with the
number "Inward Cargo."-
• -While every band -splayed well it was
the stirring skirl of the pipes of the
Lucknow Pipe Band that seemed to
catch the fancy of the crowd and
provoked repeated applause. Marching
down in front of the grandstand to the
tunes of "Bonnie Dundee" and "The
Road to the Isle." the pipers were
greeted tlernultuously. e -
