THE SHORTAGE OF NURSES
(Chesiey .Enterprise)
Contributing' to the present shortage
is the fact that the Ontario Govern-
ment, under ,pressure from " the Nurses'
Association, prevented small hospitals
from having training schools for nurses
and concentrated' this training in the
large hospitals.'' As a result, there
p
were fewer graduates. It .had the
effect ' of causing a shortage, -raising+'
wages., and giving betteronrc ,for
nurses;---but—the abnormal - situation
created •;by tliewarhas placed seine
hospitals 'in a .desperate position as
far as nursing help is concerned.

Things Around Honie
One • welcomes the change f
sedentary occupation to rather
getic exercise that outdoor to
early Jane provide. The lawns and
garden are providing me with much
steal exercise. Weeds will grow ;
grass' gets long quickly these moist
days. -The spade, 'the hoe, and the
seder, to say. nothing about ,the'hancd-
rake," remind one of their Usefulness.
.The hoe has a sh iky head—makes me'
think of a good friend` of mine who
has developed a sort of palsy.
The rake sone' whichad
to be substituted for one that hats
nobly borne the burden, and the reach
of the day on smooth and rough areas.
'One day it shed its head--self-decapit-
atioit was my verdict after the inquest.
At • the close of the day after laboring
with .these tools, with the lawn mower
thrown in, .__which .is behaving itself
very' well this year, one gets • very
tired. Backache and other aches move
into the house of spy body and are dis-
greeable boarders to cater for. But
resh air and sunshine are rewarding.

he garden is big with promise—you
hould - see -how the strawberries are
ornsing 'and how -goodly the early
otatoes are to look upon—the extra

Canada's Trained Leaders
One of the most significant things
brought out at the dinner was that
never in our history has Canada had
.so many highly trained political leaders'
as it has today: All parties bevies men
still young • years but old n ex-
perience gained through difficult war
and immediate pre-war years. "' John
Bracken of the Progressive Conserv-
ative party has had twenty years as'sa
Provincial leader which included most
of the first two
Leader ColdwellThas borne war. most of
e weight of the national leadership
of his 'party for more than ten years of
'verse. and worldwide political prob-
s. A large • number of men in the
•keral party have gained outstanding
xperience in peace.an.d war as .Parka
ntaalrr assistants and Cabinet Min-
ters handling all the difficult national
nd international probleins that are
ncountered in the Departments ' of
stice, Munitions and Supply, .,Recon_'
ruction, Finance, Agriculture. Vet-
ans' Affairs, National Defence, N;i:
onal Health: and Labor. There are
so at least three of the five Liberal
rovincial Premiers with - wide experi-
ce in administration. It is doubtful
any country in the world has' as
rge a number of highly trained
ders in its political parties- as, we
ve today. Mr. King will doff his
