sentence was very largely attended,
and it was resolved to forward the
following petition to the Goveror
General, "The circumstances that
provoked the recent insurrection iu
the North-west, are extraordinary
proceedings which signalled the trial
of Louis Biel; that the resentment
produced by the facts among our
population aright alter the present
good harmony now existing between
the different nations of Canada; that
the public) iuterest in maintaining
good intent and reciprocal sympahty
all go towards favoring the oorntnnt-
ation of sentence pronounced against
Biel, condemned by the tribunal of
Regina to be hanged on the 18th of
September, that the citizens of St.

praying that His Excellency the Gov-

royal prerogative to save the life of
Louis Riel by commutation of the
sentence."
