Miss Grace Baud, a beautiful girl,
1.9 genre old, of Eldora, Iowa, was a
member of the family of George John -

ladies occupied one bed m the second'.
story of the house, while Johnson and

Last night the family retired AS usual.
Miss Rand fell naleep quickly, and
just as Mrs. Johnson had nearly lost
oonsaiouaness she was aroused by
some one approaching the bed. It
was her husband. Ha leaned over
the bed and kissed her affectionately
and bads her good night and left the
room. Immediately her husband
was gone Mrs. Johnson was attracted
by the strange movements made by
her sister. Putting her hand on her
sister's face she was terrified to feel
blood gashing from her throat. A.
moment later the girl, writhing in the
agony of death, rolled from the bed to
the floor. .tra. Johnson struck a
light and discovered the girl lying
dead. The girl's throat was out from
ear to ear. The hared man came in

Loudon, Jnly 20.-A serious smaah
up oconrred on the Grand Trunk this
morning, near the Cove Bridge, about.
a mile from tho city. About 9:80 a
construction train left the Grand
Trunk yard for a point a short die -
lance west of the Cove Bridge, whore
a hole was being filled up on the track.
Conductor John Tomlinson, of this
city, had charge of the train, and on
board were engiueer John MIoFayden,
Angus McDonald, fireman, and Geo.
Bright, brakeman. Through some
omission or misunderstanding of or-
ders a freight train of 22 oars, under
Conductor Palmer, of Point Edward,
had started from Komoka for Lon-
don, a short time previous, and in
coming down the steep grade toward
the Cove Bridge, met the construction
train. Though running slowly it ap-
pears to have been impossible to avoid
a collision. The hands on the freight,
five in number, saved themselves by
jumping. Engineer 14IoFryden, of
the construction train, stuck to his
post, however, until the trains werea
about twenty yards apart, when he
warned his companions to jump for
their lives, which they did and es•
oaped uninjured. At the last mo-
ment
oment Molfayden also jumped, but he
was too late. The engines oame to-
gether with a terrible crash and Mc-
Faydeu was killed. The unfortunate
engineer was 47 years of age, and
leaves a widow and two sons. He
'had been in the Company's employ
about twenty years. The lose to the
Company will be. about $100,000
THE INQUEST.
An inquest was opened this even-
ing on the body of MoFayden, the en-
gineer killed in the collision near the
Cove bridge to day. The testimony
so far taken, seems to implicate Con -
dueler Tomlinson, of the construction

Loudon, July 20.—Tile Mark Lane Express
in its weekly review of the grain trade during
the past week, says ; In the early part of
the week there were heayy storms in many
districts, while in others tuere was scarcely
a shower. Since Wednesday the weather has
bean generally uusettled. Small -eared wheats
are becoming a distinctive feature of the
season's crop. The appearance of rust about
some of the stoutest wheats is attracting at-
tention ; the outlook does not improve; as
July goes by. The sales of English wheat
during tbo Creek were38,826 qura. at 33s lid,
against 31,029 gtlrs.'lit 37s 10 daring the
corresponding week last year. Poroigu wheat
is unaltered. Sellers aro firmer, but buyers
fail to respond to their demands. The off -
cast market is more active. Twenty-seven
cargoes arrived. Twenty cargoes were sold,
twenty were withdrawn, and thirteen re-
mained. The number of cargoes due is be-
coming restricted. The market showed no
improvement to -day. For wheat values
were firm and hardening ; Flour and corn
were unchanged ; ;barleys were quiet ; oats
were Od dearer ; beans and peas were un-
changed.
