Police Magistrate Young, of Hatton, deliv-
ered a very interestiug address on the Scott
Act and its enforcement on Monday evening
in Drew's flail to a large audience, who lis.
tened to what he had to say, with very
marked attention, frequently showing their
approval by hearty applause. Mr. Young
pointed out the necessity of the temperance
community being united in their efforts to
have the law enforced, and advised them to
punish violators of the Act to the fullest ex-
tent. He said they need not be surprised or
discouraged if they saw drunken men on the
street after the let of May, as in Halton the
liquor dealers made men drunk and sent
them out onthe street when the I,ot first
came iu force in that county. Mr. Y. stated
that the treating system and public sale of
intoxicants in the county of Halton wore to-
tally destroyed, and if liquor was obtained at
all for drinking purposes, the party getting
it had to sneak into garrets and other dark
holes, and there was no man who had at-
tempted to sell in defiance of the law but
had found it a losing speculation. It was
not difficult to obtain a oonviotnon under the
Act,as the finding of liquor in the bar requir-
ed the hotel -keeper to prove that it was not
kept for sale and that be did trot eon any.
Numerous convictions had been made in
Halton in that way. The speaker stated,
and defied contradiction, that the law, had
been asucrees in the county of Halton, of•
which lee felt proud, and he felt snre,it would
not be a failure in this county, The mean-
ness ofthose who were opposed to the pass-
age of the Act in not joining ` with the tem-
perance people to give it a fair .trial was
as in former years. Mr. Wm. Fonts merchants are making a grand displayis to be congratulated upon his excel in millinery this spring. lir. Erase.
